Why not wear both?

That way you can say thankyou to those who gave their lives to protect our freedom and fight to stop others having to do so.

For this particular period of the calendar year, I feel it is inappropriate and a kick in the teeth to those that gave their lives. Almost as if they are saying "I told you so".

I thought the red poppy was chosen because red poppies were the first plants to grow on the battlefields after the end of the first world war - a kind of natural symbolism of all the blood that was shed.

Once more the PC lobby stirs things. What next?:nono:

"The Co-operative Women's Guild produced the first white version in 1933 as a symbol for peace".

...

"The BBC's religious affairs correspondent, Robert Pigott ... also reports that the white version has been a controversial symbol since being introduced by anti-war groups 73 years ago".

I have no particular problem with the Co-operative Women's Guild being described as an "anti-war group", but it was far, far more than that. It was a major part of my grandmother's life and a great force in the world of women's adult education.

We have both, Red to remember the past and white to hope for a more peaceful future...

In 1933 the Co-operative Women's Guild produced the first white poppies to be worn on Armistice Day (later called Remembrance Day). The Guild stressed that the white poppy was not intended as an insult to those who died in the First World War - a war in which many of the women lost husbands, brothers, sons and lovers. The following year the Peace Pledge Union joined the CWG in the distribution of the poppies and later took over their annual promotion.
