[Misc] Red crop in fields

Some friends of mine showed me a piccy of a field they walked through last week near the Essex coast and it was a reddish crop. Bit like
wheat and same height, but with almost a poppy-red like tinge/colour. It looks bizarre.

Anyone know what it is? It's got all of us puzzled.

Photos are crucial for plant ID. However, the only plant I can think of is Amaranthus.

There are red-leaved varieties too.

Probably not that - it has a wheat thin-stalk look.
