The mere fact us "Brits" are being told what we can and cant do by a bunch of countries that owe us their very existence pisses me off , we get no respect and no thanks from countries that would have lost their national anthems a long time ago . They want freedom but under their conditions and only if and when it suits them .

Well done Rangers:thumbsup:

Yeah support Russia then if you’re harping on about the 2nd world war.

Or turning your argument on its head... British clubs want to participate in UEFA competitions and abide by the rules but only if and when it suits them.

The rules state that no national anthems should be played before matches to turn them into nationalistic events; this is a club competition and that is perfectly sensible approach. However, nothing would have stopped Rangers fans singing GSTQ to their hearts content. Now this precedent is set and Rangers aren't going to be sanctioned are we going to face home sides regularly playing their national anthems to mark all their various national events?

He's clearly a bit of moron and thinks it's 1945 and that we won the war against all those forin types on our own. I can't believe you wasted 2 minutes of your time responding to him.

Again, I was questioning your assertion that “wee krankey would be pissed off”.

In the very article you quote it says:-

“On Friday the first minister said party policy was that the Queen and her successors would lead the country.”

The reason I think wee Krankie will be pissed off, is that the monarchy will be viewed as a British establishment, and the current outpouring will encourage positive feelings for the Union. Even if some of the SNP are OK with keeping the monarchy as the head of state, the sentiment generated from the Queens death and Charles becoming King will influence opinion.

I understand your point but I also think that having the ability to allow exceptions in ‘extreme’ circumstances would have reflected very well on UEFA.

A head of state who dies after 70 years on the throne is exceptional. If such an event were to occur in another country with a monarchy and that club wanted to honour their memory I would not be put out if this happened when playing an English team.

There is no “right” or “wrong” answer here - just opinions. And this is nothing to do with Brexit nor bashing Johnny Foreigner - purely recognising that some events are historic and the ability to offer some leeway could be viewed as sensible. Inflexibility causes resentment IMO.

Its been 77 years. Should we also still be licking the boots of the Russians and Americans, without whom we would have also lost the war?

Britain is the only European power who, since its heyday, was never occupied, didnt lose a world war, and didn't face a revolution. In no small part this was due to geography and political stability, without wishing to do any disservice to our armed forces. Maybe that's why a significant portion of the population still has delusions of grandeur so far past its sell by date. We are just another second-tier power, and mainland Europe doesnt owe us anything anymore.

It opens up a can of worms though. Who are going to determine what is or isn't exceptional circumstanses?

What if Rangers were playing some Irish side - wouldn't it have been a shitstorm? What if a Bosnian side think that their 30th anniversery of independence is an exceptional event and they were scheduled to play Red Star Belgrade? There would be blood.

Exactly. I think you have to be particularly hard of thinking not to see that and understand that is the reason why national anthems are banned. Personally, I'd ban Rangers from Europe for a year for this.

I`m not "harping on" about anything , to suggest i should support russia is as ridiculous as your effort to miss my point , you know what i am getting at but choose to make it about something else . If you want to go that route what about ww1 as well , my biggest problem with UEFA is that we invented the game , and they tell us what to do , we have very little say , in the same way that FIFA screw us over with the WC . You don`t have to like it , but that is how i see it .

A monarch of 70 years passing doesn`t happen every week , i think they could have turned a blind eye to this one occasion , highlighting it is far more likely to make it happen again , if it had been left alone people would have taken it as it was meant , and that would have been that .

If licking boots is your thing you go for it , as for Europe not owing us anything anymore i disagree , a simple sign of respect under unique circumstances would have cost them nothing .

Not sure what point you`re trying to make , but the modern game as we know it was for all intents and purposes invented in England .

That because of us those countries are now free to play their own anthems.
It’s pointless sorry, if you see can’t see your intimation of us saving them.
I’ll move on sorry.

I don't think anyone could stop you from leaving UEFA/FIFA if you want to do your own thing.

Screwed you over with the WC? You decided not to arrange the World Cup 2030 because it wasn't as lucrative as arranging the Euro 2028.

What i was trying to get across (obviously poorly) was that the whole world respects Greece at every Olympics as Greece is the home of the games , yet we get told what to do by UEFA and robbed of a 2nd WC by a very bent FIFA and Russia and Qatar . And so we don`t get that same respect even though England is the home of football .

So the brown envelope wealding money men from Russia and Qatar along with Sep Blatter had nothing to do with it ? , why would we put the effort in again for probably the same outcome .

In fairness the home side did not play the National Anthem. The fans sang it.

I'm sorry but there is a right and wrong answer here; the rules of the competition are that it's a club not national competition and therefore national anthems are not appropriate. We all know that Rangers fans are staunch unionists and so breaking the national anthem rule is making a political point, which is what the UEFA rule is designed to prevent. I'm sure the 100th anniversary of Irish independence, or the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution are very emotional and important events for clubs in those countries but they can't drag that into club football tournaments...
