Anyone of sound mind, should want HMRC to win that. No-brainer.

HMRC will win in court...it's guaranteed, and Rangers know it.

Rangers stupidly wrote the EBT payment into players contracts,as a tax evasion element. There's no way on earth they can escape a guilty verdict.

Game over.

What would happen to Scottish football though? It only survives because Rangers play Celtic at least 4 times a season. If they were relegated or what have you, it's going to have a huge impact. I could see the whole league going under.

Harry got off with a highly implausible explanation, Rangers should call him for advice.

I think it would be a good thing for Scottish football, it's been dominated for far too long by the "big two"

Perhaps Rangers should get all their former players to bring their pet dogs into court and also their GCSE woodwork certificates to prove they cant read or write.

That should do it?

Most clubs live within their means which is why two teams dominate. If Celtic and Rangers vanished it would do the SPL a world of good

No, the SPL as it currently stands would be over. The whole structure of it is so that Celtic and Rangers play each club at least twice, and some of them 4 times in a season. For the other clubs living off League One like attendances, having Celtic and Rangers visit them is massive to their 'means', if you take one of those away, most clubs will no longer be living within their means.

It may well do Scottish football in the long run the world of good, but the SPL as it currently stands will die.

the result of the case on tax evasion is due soon hence the timing of Rangers bid to escape into administration - one might suspect that they know the likely outcome :)

If Rangers go bust and form a new company what is the betting that "Rangers 2012" get special dispensation to remain in the top flight SPL - for other clubs to vote against them would be like turkeys voting for Christmas with the revenue they would lose from those 4 games a year.

Hopefully though it puts to bed forever any chance that either Rangers or Celtic would ever be allowed to join the English leagues.

As an aside, I was talking to family members from north of the border and from the principality about the SNP's plans for seccession which would also kill any possibility of the Glaswegians ever being able to play down here. My Plaid Cymru voting nephew who supports Cardiff was most upset when it was pointed out to him that if they followed suit then both Cardiff and Swansea would surely, under FIFA rules, have to piss off and play in the LOW.

I don't know enough about how it works, but it strikes me that HMRC are not having the best of times of late, yet I don't hear too much criticism of them...

- A reported £8m spent pursuing 'arry for, what, £30k or so. And failing.

- Allowing Pompey to accrue even more debt, not long after costing the taxpayer tens of millions of pounds through the prior administration. Seriously - are they not able to DEMAND immediate payment of all tax monies, on a month by month basis, on occasions where something like an administration has occurred? This would stop Pompey, errrrrm, doing a Pompey and just doing the same again.

- Rangers accruing this debt through supposed dodgy behaviour over many years. Like all football clubs, Rangers will employ a small number of highly paid individuals. It must be blindingly obvious whether they are handling their PAYE and similar correctly or not. But, no, Rangers are allowed to continue to the point that up to £75m is owed. This money will never be retrieved and the taxpayer loses. Again.

I can't see any other verdict either but what staggers me is that why would a club like GRFC take a risk like this? Sure its attractive when signing players to say "well Wigan might be offering £2,000 pw more but you will pay a lot more tax with them" But surely its crass naivety to think they would get away with it?

They must have had some very bad advice.

Another thing: This whole 'battle' to appoint an administrator illustrates that, even though the role of an administrator should be quite tightly defined, there is clearly a difference in approach that may be more beneficial to the poor blighters, including HMRC, that are owed the money.

I think this is has also been the case in the farcical situations that played out at Pompey and Leeds.

This is why I believe the F.A and HMRC should have some involvement in these clubs, transparency is vital. If they had oversight, then they know they can't just spend spend spend, borrow borrow borrow, and then beg beg beg. If they choose too, then they should be allowed to go under.

Capitalism is about winners and losers, if there's no losers then there's virtually no point to the system. Why should people be kept afloat by the tax-payer, and allowed to continue on like nothing ever happened. Shock treatment would do wonders to football if Rangers go under, perhaps it'll make other clubs about pursuing dodgy dealings...But that is my opinion, of course.

Didn't the owner buy this 'toxic assets' for about a £1, may have to make them perhaps produce more home grown talent. I bet they have paid some big wages in the previous years to attract top players.

And getting too close to Goldman Sachs and writing off billions (may be an exaggeration) of tax. The bloke in charge has fallen on his sword I believe. That stunk.
