Question regarding Crawley Town FC

I've always followed their fortunes since my cousin captained them for many years.

Went to quite a few of their home games in their first Conference season, but became disaffected during the Majeed times. Seems they're better run again now, but still can't stand Steve Evans. I wish the club well, though, and hope they make it into the league. I found their supporters very welcoming, even though most knew I was really an Albion supporter.

I still struggle to think of Crawley as a Sussex town, though. No idea why!

It was Crawley Borough Council who didn't want the Albion playing there, not the football club.

And who elected the members of Crawley borough Council ...? People from Mars...?

I've always found Crawley to be a typical soulless 'new town'. Not as bad as Bracknell or Basildon though.
As for the football, most of the population there seems to follow Chelsea or our friends from SE25.

I think the myth that it's full of crystal palace supporters contributes to peoples poor opinions. I like Crawley, honest working town, not some terrible dormitory town like so many in sussex.

I have no feelings for or against the football club, but Crawley is just a horrible town, especially when compared to Brighton. Perhaps the negativity about the town transfers to the football club in some people's minds.

If i remember correctly, when Broadfield Staduim was built one of the conditions was that only Crawley Town would be allowed to play there. This was to placate nearby residents in Broadfield.

Totally correct. Crawley is mostly a Chelsea hotspot, but you do see Brighton & Palace fans around.

I always have chuckle on here at people accusing Crawley of being a shit hole, when in reality it has proper jobs, things get built, and it is forever improving. So many smug twats on here just because they can see the sea from their bedroom windows (if they look close enough to peer behind their "view" of Shoreham power station, or are able to get up late enough to see it i.e. they don't have to get up a 5am to commute to a town for a job that'll pay something in excess of minimum wage).

You only have to look at the club crest, and the branding in their club to realise that they are a sad bunch of football league wannabe's who have always thought themselves better than the non-league clubs around them. I don't think they are particularly liked by anyone, not just Brighton. They've upset a lot of sides through the non-leagues with their arrogance, and that just continues. Their manager Steve Evans is also the most obnoxious disgrace of a man to manage a football league. Several convictions, assaults on opposition players, bungs, the lot. They have a decent fan base, but their board are delusional. Another with the administrators in a couple of years (and not for the first time either!).

I'd agree with this, Crawley is almost unrecognisable from the town it was 15 years ago. It always seems to attract investment and has a vibrant commercial sector, with plenty of business headquarters and industrial estates.

It’s never going to be as trendy as some places but it is no worse than similar sized working class towns like Swindon.

Crawley is not a shithole - Dagenham is a shithole. Stoke is a shithole. Moss Side is a shithole.

Crawley is just ordinairy - a plain ordinairy town

I don't have a particular dislike for them, but the ground business didn't exactly endear them to anyone. Then again Gillingham stepping in didn't exactly make them popular, did it.

I think as fans of one club, we instinctive dislike all others.

I live in Crawley, support Brighton always have done. I have no affinity with CTFC- I keep an eye open for their result and thats about it.
The Albion is in my blood, and you'd be surprised just how many Albion live in Crawley
As for the town it has it's dodgy parts and some nice parts, much the same as Brighton and in fact nearly every town and city in the country.
Crawley provides a lot of jobs for the rest of sussex thanks to the Airport and Manor Royal.

The seaside.
Creepy is far and away the horriblest place in Sussex (and yes, I'm even factoring Hastings into that).

That it is full of wannabe london gangster pikey types shouldn't come as a surprise if you know the place's history. It was originally established as a new town specifically to house the problem families that London boroughs wanted rid of. The theory was the 'country air' in Crawley would somehow de-scum them. Ha!

I don't know if it's still the case, but certainly a few years back it was widely known (and covered in length in the Argus etc) that West Street clubs and bars wouldn't let people in if they had Crawley addresses on their IDs, as statistically people from Crawley were causing far more trouble on nights out in Brighton than people from anywhere else.

For a snapshot of the people of Crawley, catch a train to Brighton that stops at Three Bridges around 8-9pm on a Friday night. Horrifying people.

FWIW I hate Crawley Town because (a) I associate it with those chavs on the train, even though they probably all support Chelsea, and (b) they are currently trying to buy a league title in the most blatant way since Blackburn in 1994-5.

I think you'll find that it was built to house immigrant workers that the fast growing airport was attracting.
