Although, as Beach Hut will confirm, they didn't pay for their ticket.

Correct if you work for a Train Operating Company however if it is a company that does not actually run trains but are entitled to the "perk" it is taxed as benefit in kind.

In my experience, limited admittedly, the price of food on trains is adversely disproportionate to the quality of the food, which is variable at best.

I was talking about the days before TOCs, when all of you lot worked for British Rail.

Only a limited number of journeys were free (I seem to remember being allowed seven a year) - you had to pay for the rest, admittedly at very reduced rates though.
