I see that MPs are about to vote on whether pubs and clubs in the UK should ban smoking, what do you think ? Personally I'm an ex smoker but as I don't dtink anymore I have no problems as I don't tend to go in pubs much. Maybe the answer is smoking and non smoking pubs which should make most people happy.

MPs to Vote

I wan't in favour of a ban but then I went to Dublin and saw how well it worked. I am now in favour of a blanket ban on smoking inside public places.

I don't smoke and until last year wasn't really that fussed.

We went to Norway for pre-season where smoking indoors in pubs etc is banned and it was so much nicer.

I won't lose sleep over it not being banned here but I would like to see it banned.

No. It'll destroy the British pub industry.

An estimated 30% decrease in trade in New York (although the anti-smoking campaigners in New York choose to ignore what the bar owners are saying, and report it as a success). A 16% drop in sales in Ireland. 2,000 (of 14,000 in the hospitality industry) jobs lost in Dublin since the ban was introduced. Wetherspoons predict a drop in sales of 7% this year directly as a result of them banning smoking. Current estimates for the UK suggest that around 30,000 jobs in pubs will be lost, with a drop in sales of £230 million.

Pubs are already going to the wall alot of local pubs up round here have been closing down lately - but still the stand up blaring music places survive, the pub industry is already creaking - could go either way.

I really hope the government have the balls to push this through. I'm an ex-smoker and I can honestly say that I doubt I would have started if smoking was banned in pubs. On a recent trip to Cork it was refreashing to put your coat on the next day without it smelling of an ash tray.

That's where it will fall down this government haven't got the balls to ban it.

As a high percentage of there voters are Northern, dole scrounging chain smokers who spend all day drinking in pubs.

It is, I agree - roughly 20 pubs close their doors for the last time every month - but why hasten that demise? The only sensible option is to keep things as they are now, and let the landlord decide whether he wants smoking in his establishment.

ban it

I spoke occaisionally, and will continue to do so I reckon, but pubs are too smokey and nothing will change that other than a ban, and I hate eating in smokey places.

having said that, a smoke after dinner is another matter !

I'd prefer to see it banned everywhere, although I'm more bothered about restaurants than pubs. I'll never understand someone lighting up in the middle of a restaurant.

Only pubs that lost sales here when it was banned were shitholes. So much so that the biggest shithole pub in my town closed down for 6 months to try and make itself classier (didn't work, but hey, they tried).

Possibly because the majority of people who were entirely unwilling to leave the pub for a smoke - nearly all of them have some form of outside area - were the kind of person that frequented a shithole pub.

Ban has worked excellently, can go out and not come back smelling of an ashtray, nowhere near the level of "pub death" the vitners association cried about, same with the vending machine operators, etc, etc.

As a smoker I would say Ban Me! I am a disgusting addict and need the state to control my cravings.

Wetherspoons were planning a blanket ban on smoking in all their pubs from May 2006 - anybody know if they are still going to go ahead with this or have they bottled it?
