My new 'best pub in Brighton for a roast dinner is The Open House, Springfield Road.

Went this weekend and it was good. They even had roast duck.

That is a good pub all round

I do agree. I live on the other side of town but make the effort to go there now and again. Nice in the summer as well as the garden is surely one of the best (they also have some pretty mental parties there but this is another story).

I was there on Friday after work for a couple of beers and a bowl of chunky chips.

Decent pub, good beer, excellent food, happy atmosphere.

Appalling service.

Service was alright when me and die Frau were there but all they were doing was banging out roast after roast. I guess 4 out of 5 aint bad though? You're right about the atmosphere.

Still can't get on with that place, the bar service is truly awful sometimes. The kitchen might be good but I'll not spend a penny in there until some of the staff improve their social skills.

If it was £9 a chuck, would you still be happy ?

And I'm not taking the piss btw...

Been lookin for a good carvery for a little while now... The Master Mariner in the marina used to be excellent years ago but that was taken over a couple of years back and turned to shite. The Royal George on Holmbush roundabout ?? Anyone been recently ??

Can't argue with the value for money but the one time I went the meat on offer was fine but vegetables were very over-cooked and the roast potatoes were the worst I've ever had!!!

Me and the missus went to the pub around the corner for a Sunday Roast last year. Never been back since. They had a BOGOF but managed to shortchange us which meant they couldn't give us what they owed us until the following day when the till was cashed up as the gaffer wasn't there. It took them 1 hour and 15 minutes to serve up our dinner saying that they didn't have enough people in the kitchen and the chef was dong 3 jobs at once. Didn't even get an apology when went back for our missing tenner.

Owned by County Carveries (M & B) the group that have recently taken over The Sportsman so the same applies good value for money but would never win an award as the best ever carvery. £3.59 for a roast dinner with a choice of Beef, Turkey or Gammon is good value.

Park View is exactly the same.

What is it with certain pubs? They seem completely oblivious to the importance of decent service, when they obviously go to great lengths to get the drink / food / atmosphere right. If the service is crap they might as well not have bothered.
