The dull part of the south coast
Compare this to West Ham rewarding ‘Knollsy’ for fighting off Alkmaar fans trying to storm their end last season. He was rewarded with a free ticket.

I am not condoning violence - just pointing out that there is a real inconsistency in how these events have been handled.
There is no comparison. Alkmaar fans had made their way across half of the stadium to confront West Ham’s friends and family section. The West Ham fan in question was stopping their fans who were about to attack anyone in that section. A completely different scenario, it seems, to the events in Athens.

Not buying this. It’s football. You let yourself go and have a laugh and sometimes cross the line of what you’d normally act like after a few beers. A few wanker signs and banging on a Perspex wall isn’t worthy of your comment - it happens everywhere and this is tame. Lighten up a bit imo.

Of course it was tame, there was netting and perspex to stop anything happening. But at what age did you realise pointlessly banging on the perspex, making wanker signs, threatening people who can't get at you (or you at them) and trying to impress the teenagers around you is a bit embarrassing when everyone knows nothing is going to happen.

17, 19, 20, 25, 30, 40, 55 ?

I don't really want to get involved in this arguing about our fanbase but I think you're being a bit unfair really. The things you've mentioned bar the seat politics are done by everyone. Old blokes seem to spend more time on their phones than anyone else. Some unassuming 60 something in front of me at Fulham was on his phone for probably the entire match (looking at escorts btw!). The beer thing you mentioned is a good solution no? I wish more people did that, it would help the queues. Complaining that these young fans slag off our players is so ironic. Have you seen this board after we lose. Do you think they're all on here or something?

I have to say one of these groups was next to me at Arsenal away and were the only ones in the area trying to get an atmosphere going. I'm more bothered by the people who stand for 90 minutes in silence with their arms crossed and tut at people for singing too loud.
I can tut very loudly and in tune thank you very much. I generally fold my arms, I certainly don’t cross them - I’m not dead yet.

Yeh def a bit embarrassing but not a reflection on them or our fan base as a whole for me. Which is kind of what the post I replied to suggested. Things happen and it’s usually forgotten or just part of it. Just a normal thing that happens at football. And no, I wouldn’t be doing it personally 🤣

The old North Stand and Chicken Run in the 70’s reeked of booze. Every pub anywhere near the Goldstone was rammed on a match day. I can remember random supporters throughout the Chicken Run drinking Scotch from handheld canteens …. you could smell it. With beer at 25p a pint, happy days for supporters.
25p a pint, yes, but your weekly wage was only £20! Sometimes life can be so shit. :lolol:

To be fair, as I have said previously, I don't have an issue with young kids having their first beer, away with their mates for the first time, and full of testosterone getting a bit excited (glass houses etc) but 55 years old ?

I didn’t realise Adolf Hitler (bottom row, third from the right) was an Albion fan. Quite extraordinary. :drink:
Talk about hat obsession. Even the women. Sorry, laydeez (it was a long time ago).

Was it especially cold back in the day, or were they terribly terrible followers of fashion, even then?

What thread can't be improved by a song from our Ray ? "Let's have a laugh, no one's here for Art"

Amazing to think that there was a time when it was totally accepted that most fans went to football to watch the game, rather than it all being about getting pissed
Did you not watch us in the Hyypia season?

I think some people need to just lighten up a bit as well, and realise sometimes it is fun to have a few beers and wind up the opposition fans from behind the safety of the segregation (providing they don’t carry knives). Obviously wind milling a few Greek blokes is a one off incident, don’t think it’s a massive inditement on our support. I agree with @Ike and Tina Burner I’ve always found older blokes far more problematic at away games than younger ones. Too many people accuse them of being plastics etc, when a lot of these lads put in the miles every week. Most of them are completely sound if you actually talk to them.
