The other day I was talking with someone who is involved in preparing a campaign to keep local Post Offices open. Apparently there are a number of village Post Office proprietors who are hoping to be closed down, because closure offers them the prospect of a decent retirement / redundancy / compensation package that would never come their way if they simply stayed open and reached retirement age in the normal way.

Needless to say, these views are often at odds with the wishes of the local community who use the shop that will close when the post office goes.

Bizzarely in my little village we have 2 little post offices. I would have bet my Mortgage on one of them being closed in this round of closures, but neither of them is. Glad I didn't make a bet.

Aren't pensions paid in to bank accounts by default and not at post offices anymore?

Indeed they are. And stamps can be bought anywhere.

What gets lost when a local post office goes is the shop that it supports. In rural areas, this is often the only shop for miles. Running a village shop is uneconomical without the income from the Post Office.

They closed the main Post Office in Central Bromley which was a big one. It's now in WH Smiths and is a complete zoo.

Didn't particularly mean for pensions, but a lot of older folk i know use the local post office for little bits of grocery to save them going to one of the larger supermarkets, often miles from where they live.
