It isn't. The ate is unnecessary. Orient means the same.

Orient has been on the decline for a good while (although this is distorted by the use of orient as a noun.

Another one on the telly box last night, Britain in bloom. Presenter asked a schoolchild if they were creatative. Obviously wasn't happy using the normal creative.
