Robin Martin-Jenkins is determined to get his Sussex place back after enduring “the most frustrating day of my career” when he was dropped for their Friends Provident Trophy semi-final win over Gloucestershire.
Sussex opted to play leg-spinner Will Beer instead and his selection was justified as the county won by 34 runs using four slow bowlers.
He said: “I want to play and contribute in every game possible and it was a hollow feeling when we reached Lord’s last Sunday and I wasn’t in the team – it was probably the most frustrating day of my career.”
Now the 33-year-old all-rounder, the third longest-serving player on the staff, is sweating on his place for the Friends Provident Trophy final against Hampshire at Lord’s on July 25.
He added: “I usually bowl well there and if it’s a new pitch, which it should be for a final, rather than a used one which takes a lot of spin hopefully I will be back in contention. Those sort of occasions don’t come along very often and I want to be part of it.”
Martin-Jenkins was also left out of the Championship side after a run of 25 successive appearances for last week’s game against Warwickshire with Dwayne Smith keeping his place.
He added: “It is difficult because Yasir Arafat is back and has to play and Dwayne bowled well in the last match against Somerset. I did feel a bit out of rhythm a few weeks ago but the ironic thing is that I felt I had started to bowl well again last week when I was dropped.
“Hopefully I can get back in and prove to (captain) Mike Yardy that I’m still a good bowler. It’s an important part of the season coming up with a Twenty20 quarter-final two days after the final and I want to be involved as much as possible.”
Coach Mark Robinson has hinted that he could return for Wednesday’s Championship game against Hampshire at Arundel but Martin-Jenkins is desperate to be involved when Sussex start their defence of the Pro40 crown against Essex at Chelmsford tonight.
Robinson said: “We have got some good selection options. I’m sure Robin will feature a lot in the rest of the summer. It won’t have done him any harm to miss out in the last two games because he plays in all our competitions so a mental break won’t do any harm and when he comes back I’m sure he will be stronger for it.”
