i can see people doing crime, just to get inside for a job!
part of me thinks, depending on the crime committed, that prisoners gave up their 'human rights' when they broke the law..

pretty ironic when you think about it, so many people (Me included!!!) need work and then there going to give work to people who have done wrong in some way, I appreciate the money will be crap, but its still work!!

And the question that has to be asked is wil it be taking away work from people on the outside??

Oh and i totally agree with you regarding losing human rights once they broke the law..........(this should start an interesting debate!!)

Well, jobs aren't going to be magically created so yes, of course, no matter what Clarke et al will claim. They would be on lower wages as well, otherwise there would be no incentive for a company to use the service.

In one respect, I actually think this is quite good. Prisoners need to be given the skills so that they can succeed after prison - if they can't find after-prison employment many are likely to re-offend.

The article doesn't say that prisoners will neccessarily be paid for their work.

However, I do take the earlier point that this needs to not be done at the expense of jobs for the rest of society.

they are to be paid minimum wage. they then receive some pocket money from that, but most would go to victim support schemes and, interestingly, their families. makes alot of sence, chap in prision continues to pay the way of family rather than (or instead of) them being on benefits.

opne of the jobs i believe are to be in recycling centres, building prison and facilities alongside each other (cheeky privatised building of prisons in the bargin methinks)

I agree it's a good idea. I'm not quite sure how they are going to force people out of bed though. And what sort of impact will it have on the job market? Personally I don't think this is going to work in a recession where there i squeeze on available jobs, but might work in boom time.

If as said above and one of the ideas is in a recycling plant, it will have a big impact on jobs outside, we have a massive recycling plant about 7 miles outside Bridgend, and it does provide a vast number of unskilled jobs.

But as you say probably wont work until we do actually start seeing a boom time in employment.........and i'm not sure any bookmaker would give odds on when that will be!!

On the face of it it seems like a decent idea, but there's a fine line to tread. As has been mentioned, jobs for people that aren't in prison is one issue.

More troubling is what has happened in America, where the prisons are run by private companies who make large profits from the low cost work of prisoners, so it is in their financial interests to get and keep people locked up and the lobby to make it so. And on the first point a huge percentage of their industrial output comes from prisons.

Isn't this just a variant of the US scheme, where prisoners have performed low paid work for many years? In the US it's just a way of competing with the low paid markets elsewhere in the world... the equivalent of domestic sweat shops..

By the time they have gone through Health and Safety to open a can of paint, it will be back to the cell for dinner and a bed time story.

It would be a better idea if it was a proper scheme to improve local communities, painting gardening and doing my f***ing windows rather than the half arsed paint a railing a give up community service scheme we have now. All prisoners should take part..chain gangs are the way forward!

And don't pay them, we are paying enough to lock them up for their crimes anyway. 'How do we get the up' 'against human rights' a baton should do the trick.

Bloody good idea. Get those scroungers out of the bingo hall, and stop them loitering around bus stops.

Oh hang on, I've misread the title - I thought it said "Pensioners to be made to work 40 hours a week..."

So jobs are being stolen by immigrants, and are to be stolen by life-style benefit cheats being forced back into work and now prisoners. What about decent white people who want to work?

This where it is all going wrong, I dont disagree with many of the ideas to stop the scroungers etc etc, but the government are trying to hit all the fronts at once, so basically saying we will get X amount of people back into work, when basically there is not enough jobs to go round for the actual genuine people who need work.

I wont deny I am strarting to get well fed up of job hunting, it almost as if its a waste of time !!!!! I wont give up because i cant afford to....:(

I don't understand. There's all that 'free' labour available to the prison and we still can't afford to run the prisons we have properly, let alone afford to build enough of them in the first place.

It used to be breaking stone and sewing mailbags. Surely the prisons can make some money out of them?

My idea - how about chatlines for horny housewives - everyone's a winner there, surely?

'Inmates to work 40-hour week.'

Well if they could have done that in the first place they probably wouldn't be locked up.
