BBC Sport - Football - Premier League rejects fourth-place play-offs idea

The Premier League has revealed it will not pursue the idea of a play-off for fourth place and the final Champions League place.

At the Premier League board meeting on Thursday, the clubs' chairmen decided against looking into the proposal any further at this stage.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal were reportedly quick to voice their opposition.

so the Premier League is too good for the play off system, yet we continue with it in the Football League. Disgrace

Or perhaps, because there is no benefit to the influential big four it isn't being adopted.

The thing with the play offs is that it allows 7th placed teams to reap the benefits of a 4th place finish. This is an attractive possibility when the people involved are different every year, as they are in the championship, league one and league two play offs.

In the premiership, the top four are the same most years. The worst that Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool see for themselves is 4th place, which is acceptable because it gives them qualification to the champions league and the money that goes with it.

If there was premier league a play off, there would be a greater risk of them failing to qualify for the CL and losing out on that money would be massive. The cost of failing to qualify is too big a risk for them to introduce the play off system.

It isn't about the premier league being too good for the play offs, it's about play offs being too big a risk for the top four.

The Guardian summed it up by saying the Premiership should think of more sophisticated ways of making the league more competitive.

If your not good enough for a top 4 finish after 38 games, then you dont deserve to be in the champions league to be honest

The same could be said of Football League and promotion if you are not good enough for automatic then you miss out but according to the FL the play offs are very popular with clubs and fans alike.

Don't the third and fourth placed teams have to qualify for the Champions League? As Liverpool failed to do this season!? So there is an element of a play-off about it already...

It shouldn't be about the big 4 want. It should be about what the fans want. Take away the fans and and people paying sky money and they are nothing. Total disgrace!

To be honest at first I thought this was a great idea. Big games at the end of the season with lots riding on them sounds great. Then I thought about the World Cup. Players would be playing until the end of May leaving them days before a major tournament. Really we should be reducing games not adding to them. Scrap the league cup, make it Coca Cola leagues only and get rid of the JPT. At least then there would be some sort of excitement in reaching the final.

Getting Promoted to a different league is different to Champions League football, and teams who get promoted via play offs, depending on size of clubs tend to struggle around the drop zone, so what would be the point in, say Fulham, or Birmingham winning this play off and possible getting knocked out in the qualifier when Liverpool/Arsenal/Man City or whover gets 4th spot, would most likely quilify

Agree with a lot of this. Every time a major tournament comes round, our players have played about sixty odd games and are shagged out. All to make the money men happier ???
