[Football] Premier League games this weekend - POSTPONED

My understanding is that there are two things to be balanced (I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has already been said).

Obviously there is the need to mourn and pay respects, and sporting bodies will have to decide how this is best done.

In addition to this, there is the fact that police resource has needed to be moved. When the Tour of Britain (cycling) was called off last night, it was reported that a major factor in this decision was that Police forces were no longer able to guarantee that they would have the resource available to support the event, as Police resources may be required elsewhere.

I have no idea, but here is the statement from the race organisers:

Following the sad passing of Her Majesty The Queen, last night we made the decision that the final three stages of the race in Gloucestershire (stage six), Dorset (stage seven), and on the Isle of Wight (stage eight) will not take place.

This decision has been taken in consultation with stakeholders and partners as a mark of respect and in light of operational circumstances, including the understandable reassignment of police resource at this time, which means that the race cannot continue.

I would guess if the Met become stretched having to do crowd control etc.. they will pull in resources from other forces to help out, and those forces will then not have enough police to man football games etc..

There was a fear that London would become 'full' this weekend with infrastructure unable to cope with the sheer numbers of people coming into the captial.

Mass gatherings in London for such a state event will also need further resources as the risk of terrorism rises.

Just had an email through to say they've now cancelled all National League system, FA trophy and grassroots fixtures scheduled for this weekend. Ridiculous. What are we supposed to do this weekend, crawl up on our sofa's and cry our eyes out for 2 days. This is nonsense, we're such a backward country at times.

Surely everyone getting together, enjoying British culture and life would be a far more fitting tribute.

Notice that none of us are considered too sad to be going to work, only to do anything we choose to do during our leisure time. Unless its shopping of course. You won't see the shops close this weekend. We can still be sad and spend.

Its corporate fear. There are no rules about what organisations have to do, so every one of them reacts by being as conservative as possible, knowing full well that the massively powerful right wing media will be sharpening their pencils and ready to jump on the first body that isn't displaying enough public sadness, really really hoping that its the BBC. At times of grief, communities heal by coming together. Cancelling public events is a silly move, but without leadership saying that they are useful, no organisation will have the confidence to move alone.

I find it all a bit odd. I wouldn’t say I’m a staunch Royalist but I’ve definitely been a supporter of the Queen and I’m not a Republican. But cancelling all this stuff is going to get annoying, and is going to push people further away from supporting the monarchy, not closer to it.

Yep, just been told by the chairman of the club I coach kids for that the games are likely to be cancelled. It's a nonsense. We'll just be taking our kids to play football on the now empty pitches anyway.

Not sure that's the reality. There is Official Mourning Guidance and pressure from the Government (DCMS). I will be amazed if anything happens this weekend.

It's the last weekend of the cricket season. We have an U12's final on Sunday and the pitch due to be reseeded the following week. The kids have been working all summer towards this point. Also, our 2nd's have a winner takes all promotion clash.

But you remember what happened the last time a reigning Monarch died?

Clearly not, unfortunately and as someone who sponsors a lot of youth sport I really feel for your under 12s, but this is the death of the greatest ever Briton, a one off in the history of the nation, sadly we have to go with what they dictate.
