Last night the government approved a scheme for ID cards that will cost between £500m and £15000m.
Meanwhile, premature babies suffer a greatly increased risk of death or lifelong health problems. The ammount of money we spend on understanding prematurity (and foetal origins of adult disorders) is pitiful.
* One in every 14 babies is born too soon and for some this can lead to serious health problems for the rest of their lives.
* More than 3,000 UK families are devastated by the death of a baby every year.
* Doctors want to understand more about prematurity and pregnancy complications, their only barrier is funding.
* Premature birth is the 'Cinderella' area of research - we estimate that just £10m is invested every year, £15 per baby.

calling on the government to double funding for research in this area to £20m. That is less than the cost of a premiership footballer.
