Albion are going continental in their pre-season approach for next season, with a training camp in the Algarve scheduled for July.

The Seagulls will swoop on Portugal for seven days, with at least one friendly on foreign soil already lined up against top-level opponents.

The squad will be based in the Algarve from 19th to 26th July, and the trip may also include an additional friendly, against Championship opponents.

Gus Poyet explained, "The third week is one of the most important times for the team and I have had great experiences as a player and assistant manager with the teams getting together for these pre-season tours.

"I'm hoping to see many Brighton fans in Portugal; they are more than welcome to come and join us out there. We have finalised one friendly already, but our opponents are not ready to announce their full pre-season schedule at this stage."

Prior to jetting out to Portugal, Albion will face four Sussex-based sides, with a pre-season curtain raiser at Burgess Hill on Saturday 10th July.

That game is followed by evening matches at Whitehawk on Tuesday 13th, and at Bognor Regis Town on Friday 16th, before a visit to Blue Square Premier Eastbourne Borough on the Saturday 17th.

The Seagulls will also play two further friendly matches on their return from Portugal on 28th and 31st July, before the league campaign kicks off on 7th August 2010.

The Football League season ends on Saturday 7th May, with the League One playoffs running until Sunday 29th May. The new season fixtures will be announced on Thursday 17th June 2010.

For once, a strong pre-season, the first for many years. I have never understood how playing Worthing and other little teams helps anything much other than good local relationships in the community. And announced well in advance of the end of this season; well done Gus. Sounds like we might be getting seriously well organised

Bit of a contradiction when two of the pre-season games are against opponents who came below Worthing this year ??? And Bognor got relegated, so it puts them in the same bracket as the other "little" teams!!

So how does that make it a "strong pre-season" then?

A trot-around against some non-league gubbins to get rid of some rust and get some fitness back.
Then a serious step-up at our Portuguese training camp, with some Premiership opposition.
Then back to Blighty for a couple of games probably against some League / Championship teams

Thats a damn sight better than our usual grand tour of Sussex pub teams.
