PPI Cold calls / recorded messages

I've been getting calls to my mobile about PPI claims for quite a while now - sometimes 2 a day. They start with a recorded message "Barclays, HSBC, ... etc". All seem to be from 0845 286 xxxx numbers, so I guess they're dialing randomly generated numbers from various lines so they can't be easily blocked.

A real pain - anyone had any joy in getting these stopped. I know they ignore TPS.

Unless I'm specifically waiting for a call I ignore any number I don't know - if they want me they'll leave a message

Never been in debt (other than student loan) and I get these as well, I just leave the phone off the hook..

Engage them in conversation and then tell them you work for the police......they slam the phone down quick sharp.

Same as the " microsoft..there is something wrong with your computer calls " from some twattish company in India. I managed to keep one of the phone for 20 minutes ..." do I have to switch my computer on?" " what is a mouse?". Pisses them off no end

I would do too, but I don't walk around with my reading glasses on, so when it rings, I can't tell quickly if it's a number I know.

It's a recording Dave - at least as far as I've listened. I hang up within 2 seconds.

You can always set your contacts up with a ringtone specifically for them. Then if a number not in your contacts calls the phone will ring with a different ringtone. A bit of kludgy workaround but at least you can reject the call reasonably quickly (or depending on your phone..automatically)

True, that would work most of the time (I shouldn't have to, mind). I may miss real calls from numbers I don't know.

If it's smartphone, you can get apps that block specific numbers or numbers starting 0845 etc

Put some porn on the pc and leave the phone by the speakers. It works for me.

We had these "Barclays, HSBC.." calls at work and somebody listened to the end and the recording told him what to do to stop the calls. He did it and it worked, no more calls. I can't remember what he had to do though!

The biggest problem with those calls is that if you answer and mug them off, they know the nunber is genuine and will sell it on. Likewise if you reply to a text with "Stop" or whatever, they can and will sell it on.
