I think this is just a flow down effect through the lower leagues of over inflated player wages due to the Premier League and what it costs clubs to stay in it.

Those middle to bottom type clubs in the PL are probably inflating the market for English players/Players in English leagues in an attempt to stave off relegation.

That in turn means teams in the Championship have to pay higher wages to attract decent players to their clubs.

And that then filters down into the lower leagues as well.

Our budget compared to most league one clubs isnt too shabby, just compared to the top 2-3 in the league it's not at the same level.

I also think we have very savvy people operating us who have learnt from our past troubles and those of other clubs that over spending to try and find success isnt the way to go.

I thought the new Southampton owners are seriously minted? in which case they are going to be able to get pretty much anyone they want.

Hardly surprising that we are unable to compete with Southampton. They have billionaire owners and (allegedly) are considering building a new and bigger ground despite St Mary's only being 9 years old.

We are not in a position to compete at the moment, but as has been said before, we are way behind the Southampton's, Norwich's and Leeds of the league, but quite possibly at the top of the chasing pack.

Spot on.... Huddersfield have very rich owners as well.

As said before, Calderon, Arismendi, Painter, LuaLua, Hendrie and Barnes didn't come cheap. I think the money is there, it's just that Poyet and Bloom want to clever with how they use it. We don't want to just throw money away, when we're at Falmer with more revenue streams we'll be able to attract a better standard of player. Right now we have to be more conservative, that's just the position we're in right now.

Only 1 year away from being almost a completely new club. :)

We have a rich chairman, but unlike other chairman he is not here to underwrite us.

He has very generously provided £93 million interest free to ensure that we get a new stadium which in turn will mean we are able to generate a higher turnover and potentially pay him back.

However, he is not going to blow the clubs money trying to get it promoted. As an astute businessman he knows that we cannot spend more than we have, and if he does lend the odd million here and there throughout his reign as chairman it will only be on sound investments that he knows will generate a return.

The spending will increase next summer with Falmer about to open when we will be able to recoup the dosh, but until then we are a league 1 club who although being well run don't have lots of money to waste so we will build carefully for a long future

Why are people assuming that the problem is we're not rich enough, instead of assuming these clubs are paying more than they can afford?

They wouldn't be the first to pay over the odds in the hunt for future success, or in the case of Southampton, be the first who are having their excesses financed by someone who wants to buy success as quick as possible instead of allowing it to happen organically in a way that won't lead to the destruction of the club when the sugadaddy loses interest.

southampton and swindon both have mega rich chairmen don't they? and paynter is one of swindon's top players so he's probably on a fair whack

i don't want us to "spunk money around" because that's STUPID

i'm sure if gus really wants a player then he can have him, aslong as his wages don't take the piss.........i don't want us to be f***ed in the long term for a bit of short term gain

Southampton have got stupid money to splash about. If you consider someone like Dickinson who is supposedly on 5k a week with us. It's reasonable to assume we can offer a striker we rate highly that sort of wage. A few years ago our average wage around 1k a week, it's possibly a bit higher than that now. However if you consider Southampton can double what we offer, you're looking at 10k a week. For a start, at this level, thats crazy money, secondly team spirit isnt gonna be all that great if you've got one guy earning 9k more a week than your average player. I really wouldn't worry yet, Southampton are just on a totally different level to the rest of the league financially.

And the comments to say Swindon have a better budget than us is silly, I dont know there wage budget but the story is Paynter is on a good wage and he's out of contract. So his agents will be looking to get him a better deal, which given the season he's had, he should get. So if he's on a decent wage already, 5k for example, and wants better, he's again out of our reach.

I take confidence in the calibre of targets we're chasing. Barnard would probably have signed for us if Saints hadnt come in and doubled the wage offer. Southampton can only buy so many players! I'm sure a good target will become available at some stage, by which point Saints may not need another striker, and we can pounce.

I suppose the problem becomes when the ambition of the supporters cannot be financed by the owner and in that case, the club jogs on from season to season in the third tier of the football league like a lot of teams in this division.

we will get teams who spend daft money like Leeds/Southampton etc, BUT they are really premier/championship clubs anyway and it is only financial mismangement that led them to be here with us.

I think we also overplay the Falmer factor......the players who are looking to move away Crofts, Dickenson, Davies McNulty etc are not looking at a move to Falmer as an excuse to stay...players see a ground as a ground...yes its nice and new and shiny, BUT it is the division and the team/mamager etc that keep them ( and also most importantly WAGES).....and its us fans who are the real beneficiaries of the ground
