This was on the club's site yesterday and not seen it discussed on here yet-the guy appears to be working on a different level to most of his predecessors at this club:

Meanwhile, Poyet today issued a warning to his players about the loan system for the 2010/2011 campaign.

Albion currently have six players on loan at the club, with a further six players loaned out, but the Uruguayan is not a fan of the system and is demanding a commitment from his players next season.

He said, "I know the rules in this league give you the chance to go on loan, but I want a proper squad.

"I want two players per position at least, and the best player is going to play - no matter the name, age or where they have come from.

"I then want the other player to work for the team, push for that place, and when they get the chance, to do better than the one playing.

"They all have to be convinced that they are a key part of the squad because I don't want them asking the manager to go out on loan by the middle of September.

"Players are going to be under contract with us, and not other teams in League One or Two, so there will be no wanting to go out on loan."

The man is clearly looking to build a squad of players that he wants to keep together as a unit all season long. That alone should please a load of supporters who have been critical of our use of the loan system over the last few years.

I can't wait for next season.

sounds good in theory but if you are not playing then you ask to go out on loan because you want to play competitive football and you don't always get that in the reserves

wishful thinking.

if you sign, stay down here in a hotel and don't get a game till november many will want to go out on loan. sad but true.

i hope he puts it in their contracts :)

Hopefully this will be easier to achieve next year with a more streamlined squad where everyone has a chance of playing.

We've had a lot of players this season who were just never going to get a sniff at the first team and so it is understandable that some of them would want to go off to get competitive first team experience elsewhere

As Guy or mrs Guy said, sounds good in theory!

Also if we get another winter like this one, where the reserves couldnt get a game due to poor pitches etc. then we will have to loan players out to keep them match fit.

As much as Gus is god, I'm not sure I agree with this one.

So you have at least two players for each position.

3 Keepers (they'll be two senior and probably Mitch Walker)
8 Defenders
8/10 Midfields/Wingers
3/4 Strikers

That's around his 25 squad target.

What happens if we have a blinding start to the season. What tends to happen is the side will be settled. Are you going to have 10 players hanging around, half of which won't even see the bench, and expect them to be competition to the others. They won't be playing games, so say one of the regulars has a one or two game absense, how can a fringe player who hasn't played competitve football all season, except to win his place on the back of one or two games, if the man he replaces is in top form.

The odd player might, but in most cases I wouldn't think many will.

I think the loan system would be ideal for us in letting fringe players get games. The reserve league is crap conpared to the first team league.

I agree with not having player from other clubs on loan, as we want to develop our own players, and not other teams, but this season Gus had his hands tied, and had to use it, because the players we had here were clearly not capable of keeping us up, hence why most will be shown the door over the coming days

Surely if you sign for a club, say for 2 years or more, then you shouldn't be in a hotel when November comes around?

I think the message he's trying to get across is that the core of 2 players per position (if achievable) should not be looking to go out on loan if they're not getting 1st team action for whatever reason-they should be looking to get back in the team, our team, at all times.

Seeing as how 50% of the players in Gus's projected squad would be playing for the reserves at any given time, would be interested in the club's take on how the youth system fits into such a setup?
