Nah, that was Gary Bushell in Sounds. In fact he single-handedly invented Oi! so that his thick-eared talentless gorblimey nazi mates could get in on the music industry gravy train. Danny Baker, on the other hand, got his big break on NME by arguing that deeply unfashionable acts of the time like, say, Michael Jackson, were in fact not shitAs John Cale noted at the time: "Elvis died when I did a cover of Heartbreak Hotel".
The death is sad, sure. But Elvis had been stealing a living in a casino for years, and was Not Relevant any more. Especially in 1977. Popping along to announce the death (which we later learned was while straining on the shitter, while only in his early 40s) at a punk rock gig was naïve of Baker. I seem to recall Baker was fonder og Oi! than punk, and in recent years has stated that musinc ended in 1977.
Anyway, if any in the audience knew of the death at the time they weren't celebrating. And the mockery was for Baker more than anything else, for being a tit. His recollection of the event in his own words don't map to my recollection.
Anyway, all a long time ago now.....
