I’ve been following the Albion for over 40 years and do not recall Dumpey ever being called Skates before (but May have and forgotten). So why are they referred to as skates?

Thanks

That's what Southampton fans call them

The terms Skates and Scummers go back a long way. This 19 year old article helps explain the term Skates.

Police are investigating widespread disorder by football fans celebrating their team's league victory.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the disorder occurred on Tuesday night, after Portsmouth FC sealed the League One title with a home win against Barnsley.
Various offences were reported at O'Neill's pub in Albert Road, Southsea.
Police said disorder continued in nearby streets as large groups of smelly tattoo'd gap-toothed cretins and feral ratboys were dispersed. Damage was also reported at Drift bar.

How marvellous to have these fans back in the Championship.

I remember that, wasn't it 1-0 to us? I was in the North stand and seem to remember Pompey fans being right near us in the east. They started kicking off all the advertising boards when we scored and then tried to charge at the North stand.

Seen a few reports that the Portsmouth players were involved in the disorder at O'Neills, - not just fans...

My finest memory is circa 1989 at The Goldstone where with Pompey winning 1-0 on 89 minutes, they had a player sent off then conceded two quick goals with Gary Nelson and Kevin Bremner scoring. To make it better, it was hammering down with rain and their fans were of course on the open east terrace. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of inbred #twats. I lived in Fratton at the time which made it all the more sweeter.

'92 for me. An evening game that we won 2-1, with a couple of red cards for punches thrown and a (minor) pitch invasion.

Hilarious fun as a 13yo lad, pegging it onto the pitch, only to run away when a handful of Pompey came at us :lolol:

That sounds like the game I meant. Was fairly sure was 1-0 but was long time ago. Was definitely an evening game and lots of drama as you say!

Raphael Meade sent off for us - handbags with Martin Kuhl (I think). It was a league game rather than FA Cup

Yes I think it was the cup game we won 1-0 around the same era. Was always good fun playing Pompey to be fair :)
