Unfortunately if you have spent any time at all in Brighton you will appreciate that there is probably nowhere else in GB which has as many of the attractions of Brighton, much as we may moan about some off them.
I thought I would never leave, unfortunately a woman got in the way of that ambition.

I not sure there is even a choice to be honest. You can live in Portsmouth and live every moment in fear as you walk the streets (or even your own hallway) or live in Southampton (not a patch on Brighton) and live without living in fear. People who chose Portsmouth are required to have ASBO's before being allowed to rent so that may also rule you out.

Don't listen to most of the people on here with their imaginary prejudices. Portsmouth has some great places to live and lovely houses especially in and around Southsea. Albert Road is probably the most bohemian it gets with various pubs, cafes, restaurants clubs and shops. If you like your real ale it's actually a great location. Obviously Gun Wharf is the newest development, so the properties around there and the adjacent 'Old Portsmouth' are nice but expensive both in terms or rent or to buy.

Southampton isnt great, my friend lives there but it has some nice places and I actually like it.

Portsmouth is way worse.

Go for southampton if its between these two. there are some nice flats around.

I lived on the front at Southsea and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Lots of open space right outside, some decent pubs towards Portsmouth on the front and not as far from Brighton as Southampton.

Same, I lived on Southsea seafront and that was rather splendid. The rest of Pompey is utter shithouse though.

I'm hoping to move to Emsworth some time soon. It may be a little more expensive, but it's much nicer than anywhere else in the area.

I lived in Southsea and Southampton. Given the choice, I'd probably go back to Southsea. Open parks, good pubs, walkable everywhere, flat and it's by the sea. Unless you're in and around Ocean Village in Southampton or at the town end of Archers Road, it's generally a bit grim.

I lived in Hayling Island for a while, son born at Emsworth hospital....but it depends whether you want a roaring nightlife or a more sedate living. Good Luck.

Are both correct answers.

Live near Albert Road or the seafront and you'll see that Portsmouth is far better than it's being painted on this thread. Do not, however, live anywhere north of Fratton Station - it's shit.

Southampton is dull as ditchwater and also has its fair share of rough areas.

IMHO, Southsea, Old Portsmouth and Gunwharf piss all over Southampton if you want a good night out.

I've lived in both, and found both decent places to live, in different ways. If you live in Bedford Place area of Southampton, you will definitely have a good time - great nightlife and loads of fit women

There is a carpool set up by the company, is only 15 mins down the motorway....
You'll spend that alone in the traffic queue from the M27 into Fareham; whenever I have to travel at peak times through Fareham it has been HORRENDOUS!

Lee-on-Solent is not too bad if you like a quiet life by the sea.
