So I'm moving from Preston Park to PORTSLADE (bit more space for the dog etc.) and I need some local advice.

What hidden gems are there in this up-and-coming goldmine of a community? I'm particularly interested in pubs, takeaways, places to walk the pooch, butchers & greengrocers.

I know THE STANLEY.

Gracias

Ha ha. I was going to post 'The Stanley'.....and that's it.

No butchers unless you count the dodgy discount meat place on Station Road (technically Hove). I'll drink happily in The Midway but only as I've got a few mates that drink there. Rest of the pubs are rough as f*** unless you're a local. Takeaways - no. We get deliveries from Hove. The greengrocer on Boundary Rd used to be good but now it's just another Polish deli with fruit and veg. I asked for fresh herbs in the summer and got a blank look. Restaurants - forget it.

Pooch can be walked in Vale Park however. A very good mate of ours (mum of number one son's best mate) always exercises her dog there and has fellow doggy walking chums that aren't ancient.

We moved to Portslade for 2 things, a garden and a parking space. We were pleasantly surprised with how many families there are with young kids, how nice the families are and how good the school is. Made lots of good mates. But if it's just you and pooch you're going to be seriously disappointed. Sorry.

Actually there is one take away I'd recommend on second thoughts but only if you're an early morning commuter. Tony the Coffee's coffee van at Portslade Station. Makes a mean espressooooo and for a West Ham fan he's a great laugh.

Hove is the hidden gem of Portslade.

No seriously as a Portslade old boy it is ok. Plenty of good shops down Boundary Road/Station Road. Pubs not so good - Stag & The George in the Old Village used to be OK - I think the Mill House has gone downhill since I used to go there. Stanley & Gardeners ok. I don't do takeaways anymore but Shema Tandorri in Carlton Terrace used to be good.

Dog walks - take car/dog up Mile Oak Gardens and park near East/West Sussex border path and walk up onto Downs overlooking Mile Oak. Great in summer but a bit exposed at moment but dogs love it.

Ok, the other side of the road. 5 yards out is a bit pedantic.

Sorry TD - bit of a sore point with me as I have spent the last twenty years explaining to various people that one side of the road is Portslade (Station Road) & the other is Hove (Boundary Road) and over the railway line the road turns into Carlton Terrace!!

Didn't the railway station used to be called Portslade & West Hove back in the 70's?
