In the enforced absence of Michael Yardy, thoughts with him, having been there myself, Ponting has intimated he would like a crack at the County Championship. Love him or hate him, he would be real class. Any thoughts ?

I imagine his depression would deepen quickly if he read that Ponting was the new Sussex captain, what a total load of bollocks

Don't think Ponting's the player he was. Seems to be losing it a bit too often nowadays. IMO, a sign that your nearing the end of your playing career.

Hope Yardy's ok for the new season.

Ponting is a great cricketer, but his captaincy is a bit hit and miss. I'd be pleased to see him playing for us, but Yardy is the skipper.

1) I am certain Ponting wants one last big cheque from a mug county side like a Surrey or something like that before his retirement while doing as little as possible to earn it.
2) All he probably wants to do is bat (like Brian Lara) captaincy and probably even fiedling are mere annoyances.
3) He isn't even a good captain as it is (both Vaughan and Strauss out captained him in Ashes victories, especially Vaughan with probably a weaker side)
4) It is unknown how long Yardy will be out for he may even be back before the start he may be out all season long, however, surely that is when the vice captain steps in, isn't that what the purpose of a vc is (is it Murray? this season). What if Yardy makes himself available for the 2nd game of the season, how does appointing Ponting as your captain fit into the equation then.
5) It doesn't really show much support for Yardy on his road to recovery does it.

Apart from that it it's got legs.

Another valid point, there is no way in the world that Sussex would be able to afford his wages

In fact to show how bad a captain he is to Monty and Anderson in the 2009 Ashes series in the last hour at Cardiff he bowled Marcus North from one end. That is how bad a captain he is. Good batsman mind, but his best days are behind him.

You presumably know them personally,it was only a suggestion,note the question mark at the end. I accept Yardy could be back, if so all the better, just an idea that flashed through my mind when it was mentioned on commentary yesterday.
Think I'll finally give up on this board ! Mind you, not much else to think about in Hailsham I suppose !

As a Premier membership holder and a staunch Sussex supporter for many years, I think I know enough about the make up and finances of the club to know that
a/ The club would not kick Yards in the balls by considering anyone else as captain;
b/ The club would not entertain having someone like Ponting as a mercenary for a short term contract;
c/ The club would not be able to afford a big time Charlie ( good a batsman as he is) for a season, the only likely suiters are Slurrey or Pantshire;
d/ The club would not disrupt the friendly family ethos that abounds at Hove. The Coach, Chairman, CEO and many of the players chat and interact with the supporters, so much so that at Worcester last September, some of us had a superb evening in the Slug and Lettuce, chatting and drinking with the players and coaches celebrating the 2nd division title. When Luke Wright says to you are you coming clubbing with us, then you understand the ethos that there are no big time Charlies at Sussex.

So boring as Hailsham may be, at least I dont live in cloud cuckoo land as you obviously seem to, as you say, you may as well give up.

I think you need to learn the difference between a question and a statement. The thread starter isn't stating he thinks Ponting should captain the side, just asking for opinions of whether its possible.

You come across as quite condescending & self-righteous.
