Every time I flush my downstairs toilet there is a really loud noise as the water flows back. Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I can fix it? Cheers.

What sort of noise ?
Best describe it as a very loud humming noise. Can hear it throughout the house. It gets louder as the water finishes flowing back, then stops all together

Valve in the ballcock (titter) system. Had the same problem myself - it gets worse and worse and worse over time. Now its fixed, for about 35c.

My parent's cloakroom toilet has done that since it was fitted just over two years ago. They just leave it.

They must be very tolerant! At times it feels like the whole house is shaking!

Yeah, it does sound like the house is moaning. But their house has an odd construction. The tiled floor really echoes the sound.

It does sound like an unusually large nutty turd has become lodged in the system. Happened a few years back at my place. Try and stick your hand down the U-bend and see if you can grab it by the tail.

The toilet is obviously fed from the storage tank in the loft, the noise is coming from the ball valve which hums as the mains pressure water refills the tank.Easy problem to fix, replace the ball valve, you can do it quite easily yourself.Parts approx £7 good quality one.An honest engineer will charge approx £40 - £50.Dont forget we like cash...
