I've been writing a blog entry about the release of 'In Brighton' and 'The Goldstone Rap' at http://thegoldstonewrap.com/2013/07/11/in-brighton-the-goldstone-rap-1982/ As many here know, it was the single created a year before the Cup Final of 1983, and out on Energy Records.

Please feel free to have a read of this article which covers the background to the recording, launch event and media response. I hope you enjoy it!

Having written the blog piece, I realised that, unlike 'The Boys in The Old Brighton Blue', there is no official version of the lyrics. So I've had a stab at putting them together. However, with my cloth eyes, there are some lines that aren't particularly clear. I've highlighted these lines in bold. Could you have a quick listen to the songs and either verify my attempt to transcribe the lyrics or offer your opinion of what the actual words are? Thanks!

In Brighton

Playin' em off the park this year for Brighton
We're gonna do it right this year for Brighton
Playin' at the Goldstone Ground
Where football's always found
Gonna be a party here this year

Robbo and Ritchie score the goals for Brighton
Big Fozzie keeps it tight for Brighton
The Goldstone crowd play their part
Always cheerin' from the start
Gonna be some football played down here

(Peter Brackley commentary: "It's a free kick to Brighton just outside the penalty area. In comes Andy Ritchie - oh, what a shot! He bends it right around the wall and that is a magnificent goal")

The road to Europe is open now for Brighton
They'll be a celebration now in Brighton
We'll play you'll cheer, you know
Next stop's rock 'n' roll

Gonna be a party here this year

B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N Brighton
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N Brighton
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N Brighton
(Seagulls!)
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N Brighton
(Seagulls!)
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N
B-R-I-G-H-T-O-N Brighton

The Goldstone Rap

When the whistle blows, and the fans cheer
You can hear the roar from the Palace Pier
Push the ball through the gap and pull it back
Make a run up the centre to the point of attack
When you make that cross you're gonna cross it fine
Give the ball to the player on the dead ball line
Then watch that man he's tricky you'll learn
He'll knock it in the box and make a shot on the turn

There's a shot at the goal and the fan's go wild
You can hear them singing from the Seven Dials
There's a flash of colour and it's blue and white
And it's in the back of the net to the fans delight
Now the skipper's going deep and theres a run on the wing
Gonna feel that sting
Give us one more, one more, the temperature starts to rise
Now we found a space and we got the pace to catch them on a big surprise

You Got The Goldstone Rap, the Goldstone Rap

You Got The Goldstone Rap, the Goldstone Rap

Now we're staying on attack,
Neep the others on the rack
'Til the ref gives his final blow
Now we won't look back,
Like a bullet from a gun
We'll make a killing with every show
Now the fans clap with every pass
And there's action on the bench
There's a dreamy ball that's floating down
And we've all got a thirst to quench

It's a goal, it's a goal, it's a goal
Can you hear the noise
It's a goal, it's a goal, it's a goal
From the brighton boys

You Got The Goldstone Rap, the Goldstone Rap

You Got The Goldstone Rap, the Goldstone Rap

The Goldstone Rap, the Goldstone Rap

The Goldstone Rap, the Goldstone Rap

The way I hear it: "We have the player cheer you know (or play each year you know?) , to make this club grow and grow"

If i'm right, then they are truly cringeworthy lyrics! :)

I agree, it sounds like: "We have to play each year you know, to make this club grow and grow"

I think....?!?

When the whistle blows, and the fans cheer
You can hear that roar from the Palace Pier
Push the ball through the gap then pull it back

Then watch that man with every trick he's learned

if the opponents still asleep their Gonna feel that sting

Well we're staying on attack,
Neep our rivals on the rack

Thank you for your suggestion. Listening to it back in the light of your words, I think you're definitely right about 'To make this club grow and grow.'

To me, the first part of the line sounds like 'We out play each year, you know' which obviously doesn't work grammatically. Could it be 'We're out to play each year, you know' or 'We all play each year, you know'?

:)

Some excellent amendments....

Where good football's always found

And this too! I will incorporate then now into the amended lyrics....

Was it peter brackley or tony millard?

I think it's Peter Brackley as it was mentioned in the matchday programme at the time.

Just so you are aware, It has special thanks to Tony Millard on the back of the sleeve, not saying it is him on the commentary.

http://www.45cat.com/record/nrg11

That is worth considering. It does seem odd that they didn't rope Millard in, but he probably wanted to say: "You’ve called the Seagull Line on Brighton 8049, that’s the number for Albion information every day… 24 hours a day…” on it and was overruled!

There was another song - went something like "Oh Briiiiiighton. You've got me singing the blues..."

Was it the B-side to the Cup final single?

The FA Cup single was 'The Boys In The Old Brighton Blue' / 'Goldstone Rap' so it wouldn't be that.

It might be something else that was released around that time, though. Sounds like an adapted version of the 'Singing The Blues' song that has been adopted by a Brighton fan...
