It is only on the adidas shirts, and not on all the adidas sponsored teams, it is 'adidas powerweb technology' and is supposed to give the same benefits as the base layer (skin tight) tops you see players wearing under their shirts, removing the need to wear base layers.

And this "benefit" is what, exactly?

An early flight home?

Well, Adidas has already produced TUNiT (the football boot meets technology), so why not use technology to produce a range of performance-enhancing sportswear? That's exactly what it has done with the introduction of Techfit.

Originally developed for Olympic-grade athletes, Techfit will be coming to leading football clubs, including Chelsea and Liverpool, later this month and to retail stores for us mere mortals. It's a multi-sport garment, scientifically proven to enhance sporting performance. Adidas claims it gives more strength, power and endurance by supporting key muscle groups and storing elastic energy for "explosive performance" during any athletic movement.

As an example, Adidas claims wearing Techfit apparel can enable an athlete who could sprint 100 metres in 10 seconds to run the same distance almost a metre quicker. It can add an average of 5.3% total body power output, increase maximum jump height by 4%, and accelerate faster sprint times (1.1%).

If you fancy a bit of that, a range of Techfit kit will be in stores from January 21st 2007, with prices starting from £48.

Not all the French players wore them.

As a rule, it seemed that the BLACK players wore them, and the WHITE players wore 'standard' shirts.

If from behind, they look like bra-straps, from the front, they look like they are wearing RUCKSACKS.

I wear base layers when playing rugby. I don't think the tops give a huge difference, but they can keep you warm in winter/cool in hot weather. The base layer shorts seem to give a bit of added endurance, although it could well all be psychological.

I got sent an email about Adidas having a sale, so I checked it out as I need some new astros, and I came across this -

adidas Football - France Limited Edition World Cup Set

For just £125.00 you can get;

- The official France 2010 World Cup home shirt, WITH unique adidas TECHFIT™ technology, available to the public for the first time ever...

- The historical France jersey from the 1986 FIFA World Cup tournament

Thats right, for just £125.00 you can pick up two France football shirts.

Original price... £250.00

Most people on NSC probably take their clothes OFF for explosive performances during athletic movements.
It can add an average of 5.3% total body power output, increase maximum jump height by 4%.

But these can improve their performance. So with stats like these it would be better to leave their shirts on. :p

Too far from the sun
I used to wear base layers during the heady days of parks football in Brighton League division 5. Then they were known as my 'lucky t-shirt' (moth eaten, riddled with holes and strongly smelling of BO) and my 'lucky pants' (description not suitable to type before 9pm).

To me this 'power sportswear' thing is just a load of crap for marketing purposes. What's wrong with a string vest?

I think you might be right, but the 'cold' top I got is amazing - always keeps me warm in winter, but never too hot regardless of how hard I'm working. Although the base layer tops I have are a 'player issue' ones that Wolves were selling off dirt cheap when they last changed their kit supplier. I'm not sure if they differ from the tops that you can buy in the shops.
