The playing staff are good enough to stay up. No worse than the past 2 seasons! The managers job is to coach, set them up tactically and motivate them to get enough points to stay up. Unfortunately, seeing Potter’s interview today He looked and sounded like a manager that had no idea how to turn this round. Our squad is on par or better than most of the bottom 10!

A bit of both.

It's not Potter's fault the players miss simple chances.

It's not the players fault that the manager has completely changed the style of play and discarded all the positive bits of Hughton's team.

I think who we've lost to is clouding some people's thinking. We could, should, have won today fairly comfortably if we had taken our chances/had more composure around their box. It's true that that's a sentiment that's been expressed too many times this season.

I think the big problem is the complete about face in style. We don't appear to have the players yet who are capable of implementing it fully. Potter should probably have introduced the style change slowly rather than going all in straight away.

With results going against us I suspect negativity is going to swamp this place.

I’m sure you aren’t ..and I quite respect/like WA..doesn’t necessarily mean he’s right ..three changes today ..one enforced.. you’d have expected Trossard to be playing at home ...Both he and
Montoya had good game’s offensively at Palace and March looked as good as anyone else ...so I don’t see today as about too many changes :)

OK, but, as I said to Bold, I am really commenting on the season as a whole, not particularly about today.
Whoever plays, let us hope that we can scrape survival and live to fight another day in the Prem.
I was genuinely excited when GP was appointed, but have to admit, after a pretty bright start, I fear for our survival this season. In interview he says he isn't worried; well I would be if I were him! Our form has got to be a worry and I don't think it would do any harm for him to admit it in public.
Finally, as Garry says when addressing the thread title, 'Players not manager', it has to be a bit of both.

We would have gone down last season if the current other 19 teams were in the division then. We were the worst team in the division from January onwards last year and the same can be said again now. We were incredibly lucky to stay up last season and unfortunately I don’t think we will be as lucky again this season as the sides at the bottom are better.

Where did I say the manager is having a great season? Clearly he’s made mistakes. A massive one at the moment for me is leaving out Alzate and starting Mooy.

But it is so reminiscent of last season’s capitulation that it can’t all be the manager. I think a lot of our players have been getting off lightly for a long time now and there seems a be a real mentality issue. We all knew what was going to happen today as the match played out.

Yes but that was precisely why Potter was brought in.

His philosophy of playing without fear was precisely what we were looking for.
If his philosophy only works with players who are already mentally strong, what is he bringing to the table?

In that case you would have to question his appointment? He was meant to be the man who could make these platters better. Hughton got sacked because they didn’t believe he could.

A manager can have whatever philosophy he wants. If he doesn’t have the players capable of playing that way then he is stupid to try and do so. A good and wise manager assesses what he has and get the best from it.

playing without fear is all well and good, but quite a few of them are playing without brains and playing without talent seemingly.

But Potter was brought in as he was going to be able to make the players thrive. He is obviously not quite the coach that they thought!
For me our squad is good enough to survive but the players are swapped and changed so much and they are playing different systems, with different personal every week. We need a manager who has some idea of his best team!

After witnessing that today and recent performances, I really believe we’ve got to start questioning the mentality and ability of some our long term players rather than point fingers at Potter.

It was so unbelievably similar to how we played from February to the end of last season. We have looked weak, mentally fragile, predictable and desperate for weeks, exactly as we looked then despite a complete change of management, coaches and style of play.

We say we have a no dick heads policy but maybe we also have a no bottle policy and possibly we do need some dickheads. Ryan, Montoya, Dunk, Duffy, March, Propper, Stephens, Gross, Murray, Ali J. All equally culpable last season and this. I leave Bissouma out as I think he was good today as he usually is when given a rare chance.

Big shake up needed in the summer whatever division we’re in.

On the other hand, Dan Burn is bloody brilliant. Full of spirit, bottle and ability. The others need to look at him and learn.

True in part, and yet we did make plenty of chances today, if Maupay, March et. al. had converted just a couple of them, then this thread wouldn't exist.

This, this and all of this. One or two exempt, but I think far too many don't have the bottle for a fight down the bottom. We've seen all the 'firey' characters removed from the team, Duffy not starting, Knocky and Andone shipped out, and I do seriously wonder if that's had an impact on the mentality of the squad

You are absolutely right that it is a bit of both. Potter has undoubtedly made mistakes. I was just so frustrated watching that today and other games recently that it did take me back to the end of last season and the same frustrations I felt then watching a lot of the same players.

I was anti Hughton at the end and wanted him out but in his defence, maybe he and Potter have been left with squads that are just not cut out for a long premier league season. And I do think a lot of it is mental rather than ability as they have proven they can be good enough on their day.

I just knew Potter was going to get a lot of stick today and I don’t think it’s entirely fair when to me he’s been let down by the players and also the board/recruitment.

Both. Potter had a bad day with selection and substitutions.

Maupay did well to get in positions but his finishing was woeful as was Solly’s.

The midfield was dire and an off-form Mooy continues to get selected, which can only be the manager.

I think the manager now has questions to answer, and I say that as someone who really likes what he is trying to do.

His persistence to rely on average right backs providing all our width down that side really annoys me.

What I would like to see in either a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, is to start with two genuine wide players (even if they play slightly narrow) and two genuine full backs (no dig at Burn he does what is asked).

We have the players, we have the manager, he just needs to be braver. He'll have to be now that we're going up against the big sides in our run in.

I've seen enough from us against Spurs, Utd and Chelsea that we can pick up the 12 points need.
