Montoya the highest scoring player in the EPL team of the week

Fair play to Montoya but we cant really put much credibility in that as we all know that Lewis would never get anywhere near the real team of the week as there are so many better England Centre Backs that 1 of them would have a better game,

Championship at best - Gareth knows best:dunce:

They are saying that Notts Seagull. They are saying Montoya is 8.7, Dunk is 8.0 Jiminez 8.5 etc etc
No they aren't.

They are saying the criteria they judge RB's Monty scored 8.7.
Whereas the criteria they judge CB's Dunk scored 8.

If they weren't separate analysis Connolly would score very low on 'headed clearances'.

Everyone at least OK (6s), Dunk excellent (9), Propper, Alzate and Trossard not far behind (8s)
Duffy 7 rest spot on

Well yes, but the criteria are clearly designed and weighted to allow for comparisons across positions. They are all out of 10

Lunge ? One man’s lunge is another man’s perfectly timed sliding tackle.............

But it wasn't. 2 brilliant tackles in the box but one where his foot was high somewhere between the halfway line and 18 us line back g the West stand. I noticed it because it was completely out of character to everything else he did.

I can't fathom how someone who is studying our tactics and performances so closely has awarded 8 to Maupay. Does his 'hard work and runs' make-up for his hopeless shooting? He was bought to score goals in football matches, not run the 10,000 metres.

No, he was bought to play as a forward in a modern football team meaning "shooting" and "scoring" is just a small part of his job. To take runs, creating spaces and chances for other players, backtrack defensively and put pressure high up in the pitch, because all of these things contribute to taking points and Maupay is excellent in most of these aspects. If finishing was everything needed from a striker we could just have gone with Alan Shearer or Les Ferdinand.

Would poor Montoya be the same poor Montoya who was the highest rated RB/RWB in the Premier League last weekend?

Ah it's good to be back challenging the low opinions of Monty instead of begrudgingly agreeing with them like last weekend.

Not sure where you sit but during the first half he was not pushing forward enough and kept bringing the ball back. If he is going to play wingback he needs to go forward and cross. Second half he was better.

Because they would rather look stupid than admit they were wrong.

With the team looking so assured, recently, Monty is the nearest 'boo-boy' fodder, we have.

Sure Maupay can't score.
Alzate can't look up.
El Greyhoundo is a joke.

But even the boo'ers know that's all small beer.

So unless Potter is super smart and brings Bong on for a 30 second cameo (word up) sadly for Martin he got to sit in the scapegoat seat.

Possibly.

Or possibly, his performances over the course of the season have warranted the fairly modest amount of criticism has has received.

Oh yes, and I happened to notice on the where would you strengthen thread, exactly 45 mins ago that you said

"I can also see them testing the water on a full back, or two" I think you're acknowledging that there is a general perception that everything hasn't been entirely rosy in that position.

Montoya has no obvious back-up.

I think the position needed strengthening in the Summer, that has nothing to do with Montoya's largely excellent form, this season.

As ever, internet forums give way to preposterous exaggerations one way or another. By no measure has he been excellent this season. I don't believe for a second you genuinely think that. He has done OK, but not much more than that. Considering he spent the last 2 months of last season on the bench having lost his place to a 38 year old, it has gone better than I hoped.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't tell me what I think.

Great stats according to me.

Now... I "only" have the UEFA B coaching license and have never worked in a professional club, but I know in the "modern" upbringing of new coaches, the role of the forward and how it has changed the last 20 years is one of the most discussed topics.

The 2000's have seen a great rise in goals scored by players in other positions, especially wingers and central midfielders. A new type of total football. And teams signing strikers etc only looking at how many goals they've scored is just becoming a type of small team behaviour, because it really only works if your game revolves around counter-attacks or if you play in a league where there is a lot of space (like Eredivisie).

I think Maupay brings a lot that modern type managers want in their strikers; work ethic, intuition about creating spaces for others and the technical ability to keep the ball the extra second while other players make their runs. The Benzema kind of player.

That said, of course Maupay could or even should have done more with his chances. I agree with that. But I think it will come because its not about a lack of skill, he is just not totally adjusted to playing in the Premier League and seems to get a bit stressed in finishing situations. But I think it will come, I'm sure he'll score a dozen this season.
