We were there in September 2022.

It’s touristy like Venice is, but we had a cracking good time. You can hire jet skis and do cliff jumping from a bar, if that’s your thing, or just chill on a beach, walk the ruins, do the GOT stuff or just eat and drink yourself silly.

Very expensive by Croatian standards though.

My Mrs can't swim so the cliff diving would literally be a once in a lifetime for her.
We've seen there's a massive abandoned hotel you can visit which was built just before war broke out and it was evacuated and never used again. There is also a haunted island that the locals refuse to set foot on, you can get a boat to it but they drop you off and then bugger off for a few hours.
Looks beautiful, we'll go either before or after peak season to avoid all the tourists.

My and Mrs SS passports expired about 4 years ago - we're both retired now and quite well travelled so have enjoyed 2-day breaks around the UK for the last decade. We have both wanted to travel to Ireland but have being putting this off as no passports. Well, blow me down, I've just learnt that UK peeps DON'T need a passport to enter Ireland [north or south] so planning the trip, ferry out Fishguard - Rosslare, then a big circuit. Cork, Blarney [for a kiss], Limerick, Galway, Giant's Causeway, [skip Belfast], Dublin then ferry back to Holyhead. B&B, maybe 2 weeks, maybe longer, play it by ear ....

Anyone done anything similar?

It’s surprising how many people don’t realise this. Obviously, you don’t need a passport to go to NI, as it’s part of U.K., but seeing as there’s no border between north and south (for now) it wouldn’t be possible to control entry to the ROI from U.K. even if a passport was required.

My 13-year old son and his school chums will be doing the same this summer, as a school trip. If you happen to be there at the same time I can only apologise in advance and suggest contacting Essex Education Authority for some form of compensation.

Was planning on a cheeky little trip to Dubrovnik with the Mrs to help distract me from the 3 months of incessant booing I'll be doing at our lack of signings and RDZ leaving.

We’re going there with friends early July for a few days. Also got golf pissup in Portugal next month, and try to avoid travelling much in the school holidays so next after those will be 6 weeks touring in Oz (via Singapore) in Oct/Nov, then Florida for Xmas and New Year. Going to be missing a lot of matches next season

Going to Paris with my youngest for the Olympics, undecided on whether to even go for a beach flop as a family.

The main event of course will be The Hundred, which I'm delighted to see will take up the whole of August again. But then, what sane cricket fan isn't looking forward to this marvellous spectacle? I'm just delighted I can take my son along, as he previously didn't have the attention span or intelligence to understand the T20 concept, but The Hundred has changed all that and now he loves cricket

It is.

Same way we do every year pretty much (wife’s family have roots up there).

- multiple days at the beach - the kids love it (a good book, a scotch pie, some boules will do plenty of hours if the weather is decent)
- visit Alnwick for the day (barter books etc)
- maybe do Bamburgh castle one day
- lindisfarne/holy island - maybe pop on a dinghy and see the puffins
- possibly do Newcastle one day (brother in law is a Toon fan so sometimes get to games with him)

Sounds good, there are some fab beaches up this way. If you like driving, you may be interested in checking out the Northumberland 250, although you may well have visited most of the good places already. Some canny waterfall walks in the National Park if that’s your thing. Barter Books is always worth a visit. Enjoy!

I went on a pre-GCSE school trip, ooh 15 yes ago now. So hauntingly moving, my god every stop on the tour was powerful in it's own way (Mons, Tynecot, Thiepval especially...and that enormous bloody crater in the middle of nowhere). I'm in no doubt your son and his class will be on their best behaviour. Helps if like me, his history teacher was especially inspiring.

There is a taxi tour which takes you to both sides of the wall, with a commentary. I found it fascinating but disturbing at the same time.

What I found fascinating but as you say disturbing is how close Shankill and the Falls are to each other. Can only be a few hundred yards at it's shortest. There is barely any "no mans land" so to speak it's red white and blue (and orange) there is a road block then everything the other side is green. Only thing I can compare it to (and please don't think I'm trivialising it) is the cup final where you have one team and their colours on one side of Wembley and the other team on the other side.

This is why the huge wall was built so petrol bombs couldn't be lobbed over.

I wouldn't go a bundle on Dublin, personally - it kind of feels like any other generic big city, these days. And Limerick is a bit rough round the edges. But would (and will, courtesy of family all over) happily spend time in Cork, Galway, Waterford or Kilkenny

Having only been to Dublin and Galway out of those, yeah. Dublin, OK, but Galway is one of the most delightful towns/small cities? I've ever been to in my life - the vibe, attractiveness, people and oh, the pubs It's also relatively small and manageable.

Not done that as one round trip (not for a holiday anyway) but have visited all of the places listed (bar Blarney), for work or leisure.

Its a fabulous country and well worth your time. Unfortunately, the state of the pound, means that it is very expensive now - especially hotels and eating out.

Definitely make the effort to include Cork (city)- even though its a bit out on a limb - and if you've time, a day or two in West Cork for the scenery.

Having lived there and abouts for 11 years or so Limerick has nothing going for it other than Adare and King John's Castle at a push.
As someone said to me on a plane once when I replied to his question about where I live "Limerick is just a place people pass through on the way to somewhere else"

He said in the recent podcast that they are still looking at Japan for this coming summer’s preseason.
