Sorry - I simply meant that in a number of pubs that I have been to over recent years in Sussex I ahve not seen any K&B.
What happened to Fremlins - for me it was always a case of it was good - or if it wasn't it was appalling!

King & Barnes Sussex is still brewed by Hall & Woodhouse but is now crap. Try W Kings (of King & Barnes) Horsham Best is the old Sussex Best and Red River is the old Festive. Quite a few stock it including me.

Very off the beaten track.
I remember it when it was just a beer and cider house, with no mains drainage (indeed, no toilet facilities, other than a sheltered wall out the back), and being run by a landlord who was licensee for 64 years - from 1907 to 1971.

It's for me to apologize, I assumed you knew of K&B's demise.
They sold out to Hall & Woodhouse in 2002, the old Horsham brewery site in the Bishopric was closed pronto and 'production' transfered to Dorchester. The decline of Old and Festive was as predicted by most and I've never been in one of their pubs or drank any H&W product since.
Fortunately, Harveys expanded their free trade operation and their Sussex bitter has been available locally for some years.
Two of the King brothers have set up micro-breweries in Horsham but it's not the same of course.

The Kings Head at Shoreham was the last pub to serve Tamplins Sussex Bitter direct from a barrel on a shelf behind the bar. Every other Watney's house had been talked into signing up for the Red Revolution.

K&B used to do a great Winter Ale (or was it called Old?) and I recall that we used to have to drive to a pub in Bramber to get the first pint of the winter.
Anyone remember what that winter ale was called?
I also recall having Old at The Lamb in Ripe when they used to stick a poker into the pint to warm it up. Was a sign that Winter was truly with us. Seasonality in beer seems less important than it was - which is a shame. We used to mark the changing seasons as the pints came and went.
But there is hope - Harveys keep on going and are as good as ever and we are blessed on the kent/Sussex border to have Larkins Brewery. Only supplies a few dozen pubs in the Chiddingstone area i think, but well worth looking out for.

An another corker - reputed to have the best Harveys in Sussex
Doesn't even sell Harveys. Unfortunately part of the Greene King empire.

I haven't been back to Isfield for a few years. I am GUTTED to hear that Green King have got their claws into it. I'm actually close to tears.

I rememebr it before it got hacked about in the mid 1970s. When you went in the front door there was a massive snooker room on your left; sadly long disappeared.
