Phillip Neville - most inept right back performance ever?

I couldn't believe what I was seeing, all he seemed to do was give the ball away and then go a kick the guy that he lost possession. He shouldn't have allowed the cross in for the goal and got DONE about 20 minute later when he was severely wrong footed by the guy who hit the side netting. How he managed to stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes is beyond me, especially with J Lloyd Samuel on the bench and Carragher playing at left back. I only hope Eriksson saw enough to realise the Neville is not up to International football because if he goes to the Championships this summer he is going to get found out.

BTW Don't even get me started on Alan Smith playing right wing or the fact that Defoe seems to have really impressed everybody when he didn't really do anything of note.

At the foot of the downs
It wasn't as bad as the last time Lee Dixon played when we lost 2 - 0 to France but it wasn't far off !!!

I'd love to find out what Ericssons game plan was last night, coz I really didn't make any sense off it !!!

Disagree there chappers, Roooney and defoe looked a good partnership, and were our only goal threats.

Agreed though, surely the last time that Chuckle brother pulls on an England shirt.....

Rooney and Defoe should have been our only goal threats, they were the strikers. Defoe needs to learn to pass the ball. I know he is an out and out striker but theer were two opportunities that he could have put people in very dangerous positions but chose to go for goal.

Thompson didn't do his chances much good either and I feel very sorry for Wright-Phillips.

You are not wrong Chappers (in fact with regard to the Neville clowns, er, brothers you are absolutely spot on) but I thought the others did 'ok' (in varying degrees) remembering that they only have a handful of Caps between them and we're playing a nation who are always too strong for us to beat - even when we're at full strength.

I hope none of the 'new boys' is discarded as a result of that game - and Hargreaves is better than Beckham! (ok, maybe not but I thought he did well).

I was abusing Neville big time in the pub last night and some Man Utd GOONS gave me the dirty...one of the GOONS told me to shut up so I replied "Why....he's shit!" - at that EXACT moment he got megged :lolol: that shut the GOON up and I smirked in my moment of glory!

I think it's fair to say that Defoe is a poor man's Leon Knight.

In all seriousness, these games are so useless it's untrue. How much can we draw from the fact that Eng;and B suffered a very narrow defeat to Sweden B?

Thompson didn't shine either, and he nearly got me into a fight when he screwed up a free kicka nd I piped up about Scottish football.

And I'm hungover, so friendlies suck.

Friendlies do suck.

Agree that Hargreaves looked good, I want to see him at right back. His work rate and distribution and all round game is better than anybody elses that is in contention for that spot.

My new England team is as follows...

James

Hargreaves
Terry
Campbell
Bridge

Beckham
Gerrard
Lampard

Scholes

Owen
Heskey

Phil Neville - is it about 40 caps he is on now? If ever that is an indictment of English football...

Defoe was OK, but agreed he needs to look up more. He was like that playing algonside Bobby Z in the U21s. Totally selfish. A bit like Leon, but with the lucky break in life. Rooney was good. Thompson unlucky.

People in the current England set up who should NOT be going to Portugal.

Phil Neville
Nicky Butt
Phil Neville
Alan Thompson
Phil Neville
Jermaine Defoe
Phil Neville
Paul Scholes (controversial)
Phil Neville

I dont see why Scholes should be in the team at rpesent. He hasnt delivered for England for a while yet and no for Man Utd this season either. My midfielf would read:

Gerrard Beckham Lampard (Not sure!)

Thank God I'm not the only one re Defoe, listening to the radio this morning you would have thought he had a hat trick. If he plays we need one ball for him and one for the rest of the team. He's a greedy, gap toothed pikey of the highest order and shouldn't be anywhere near the National team until he realises that its an 11 man game.

Neville was pony but we knew that anyway. It was a worse performance last night than the one against Romania when everyone was saying DONT SLIDE IN DONT SLIDE IN. Penalty. In answer to the original question he beats Keith Curle hands down.

TLO not sure how you think Butt can be left out, never lets England down and whilst Sven is going to play a diamond midfield to compensate for the lack of anyone that can trap a ball with his left foot, Butt will get the nod in the holding role.

The main positive from last night was proving that like Steve Guppy before him, Alan Thompson is not good enough. Hopefully he will now dissapear north of the border and not be seen in the English game again.

Here is a thought, how many more caps would Hargreaves have if he played in the English League. He has always looked good when called upon, but there seems to be an element of out of sight out of mind with him

Neville should never have played after Romania, he was as shocking last night as ever, I would agree that Hargreaves should play RB, he was excellent last night.

Defoe was lively, I think he should go to the finals

Nicky Butt may be good at tackling, but his distribution is woeful. He doesn't read a game in the way that, say, Paul Ince could. That's not to say the Ince was a genius - far from it - but he defined that 'holding' role in English football. If anyone was going to play that role, it should the Gerrard.

Absolutely. Waste of time last night. Take a look at the starting 11 and see who would make it into a first choice 11. I make it 3 or 4.

James - Yes
Neville - Probably unfortunately
Terry - Possibly not
Woodgate - No
Carragher - No
Butt - No
Hargreaves - No
Gerrard - Yes every time
Thompson - Who ?
Rooney - Yes
Vassell - No

I'd rather have Robinson or Kirkland (when fit) in goal than James and all. Surely Gareth Barry would be a better bet at LB than Carragher, who is never going to be a long-term bet there
