Millions. His biggest failing was playing in an era where crunching tackles from behind and on field thuggery ( yeah you Jim Cannon) were permitted. Even so he was magic. With the protection he'd get today I suggest he'd be playing at the very top level. He knew where the goal was, he had explosive pace and brilliant ball control coupled with a low centre of gravity. Phenomenal player and imo, a different but more effective forward than BZ.

If CMS is worth 3.5 million, Wardy would have been worth 3 times as much, so say around 10 million?

Maybe I've got rose tinted specs on, but. hey, Wardy is my favourtie Albion player by some margin

Contraversial I know but would he be as good in todays game?

There is no doubt that he touch and Football brain are top notch but when he played defenders would just junge in and try and take him out because he was quick and once he skipped over them he was away. These days defenders are a lot quicker and stay on their feet longer making it harder to get past them.

Just throwing it out there...

Valid and interesting point but I think he had enough about him to have shone in today's game.

If you're going to compare Wardy's style with anyone today, I'd argue it's less like Zamora's and more like Vicente's - i.e. gets the ball down, looks to turn, take on players, speed past them, go for goal etc.

The fact that Ward was a centre-forward and Vicente a wide player might be more about the way football has changed / progressed than about trying to compare like-with-like postionally.

I suppose he would be more like a winger in todays game rather than a forward. I've never seen him play so I dont really know what he was like in his prime.

I was too young to see him play, who would he be comparable with in today's game? I've always pictured him as a better version of the Derby County/Liverpool era Dean Saunders.

Need to remember he was lightning fast on ploughed fields, how quick he would be on the "billiard table" pitches of today we can only guess.

I would estimate he would be worth 10+ million in today's market. You need to forget his time at N Forest. His lack of form was more to do with Clough's attitude towards him and Clough's use of him as a pawn in the failing relationship with Taylor and not his ability.

I would say £ 7 000 000 at his peak.

Wardy had that natural ability to score goals that cannot be learned. He would thrive in todays game & would be worth several million.

Quite simply he was the best in this country for a while although it was difficult to judge in Div 3. When we did play the top teams he still made them look silly.

On the other hand, when he got a bit of a reputation, defenders simply kicked him up in the air. These days, I think he would be better protected by Refs, and more effective at the highest level.
