Just finished Peter James' third "Roy Grace" police thriller novel "Not Dead Enough" (read in two days  )

Recommend these books to anyone who enjoys reading....fast paced, excellent plot and characters and the best bit it that they're set in Brighton with loads of familiar landmarks mentioned

He was featured in the Argus the other day. And it was only then that I realised I know him. But not as an author, as someone who lives in Lewes!

I'm now very minded to get his detective novels since they do sound like a cracking read.

They are fantastic.....each one better than the one before

This one is well worth buying

P.S. If anyone knows him, ask him to get a mention of BHA FC in his next book - he has mentioned just about everything else about this great city of ours :)

I'm not entirely convinced.
I've read all his books, even pre Grace, but I'm beginning to have trouble with them.
I think it's mainly because I just can't imagine the Dead Simple, for example, plot, actually happening in lil ol' Sussex.

Even so I'm sure I will eventually read his new book, it's a shame I have about 4 other books to read 1st.

Why anyone reads fiction is beyond me. Why read something that's made up? Life is too short when there are so many good non-fiction reads out there.

The new one comes out this month I think.

He was on SCR last night, apparently they have started..(as predicted by me) filming a TV series which will make DI Grace the "New Morse" and Brighton the "New Oxford"

He has. In the opening Chapter of his last one, he says there is Graffitti on the London to Brighton train saying "Seagulls Wankers"

He's a Brighton boy, his mum owned "Cordelia James" the glove factory off Preston Drove, so he probably supports Chelsea.

Play to the End by Robert Goddard is another very good novel set in Brighton. It concerns an actor playing at the Theatre Royal, who is engaged in a very bizarre love triangle with his ex-wife, who has moved to Brighton and her new partner, plus an oddball who is stalking her. He is spot on with his Brighton locations and doesn't change the names of any of them. Well worth a read in my opinion. As for the Peter James novels, my brother was asking me what I wanted for my birthday, as apparently I'm a complete pain with birthday presents. Now I can tell him.

Do you not ever think to yourself when you're reading a line in a fiction book like 'All the women swooned at beardy gull's beard as he strutted down the street to buy a paper' "No beardy gull didn't wander down the street to buy a paper because the whole thing's made up" ? You'd be free of such thoughts if you read the classic mountaineering adventure 'Touching the Void' or FBI mob-infiltrator Donnie Brasco's autobiography.

Faced with a choice between reading 'Beardy Gull v The Aliens from Montanooga' or 'Midnight Express' I know which I'd choose.

:p

You know what, I have been going around telling everyone that that was by Peter James as well, I was even thinking to myself how much better his later books are than that one..

Almost identical characters with a Detective who believes in spiritualism and set in Brighton.

James is definitely a better writer tho.

Yes, I guess Goddard does start going round in circles a bit, and the conclusion of the story could be seen to be a bit over-dramatic. Still worth a read though.
