Leeds and Chelsea, and I'd generally play both the teams, as my brothers were too young to play properly, always scuffing the turf and squishing the plarers and the goal posts. I still have the boxes and turf in my attic. I also have a book of scores. As I was a Leeds fan they always won. The player names are all written on the box in felt tip pen. How can anyone say 'my first set was'. Surely you need two sets to play a full scale game?

This is a great and nostalgic read for lovers of Subbuteo. It confirms that Peter Adolph was born in Brighton in 1916 before moving to Gunnersbury in West London after his father's death in 1930. I guess this explains his affinity for QPR although he did have trials for Brentford. The book also has a section about other games including Newfooty and anyone else remember Soccerama?
Most importantly though there is the much poured over chart of those all important kits to collect - I think Dynamo Dresden (121) and River Plate (59) were my pride and joy!

I had the 5 a side set up too, second hand from somewhere, it was complete with 2 teams, both resplendant with mega helmet hair do's

by the Mid 80's New Road in Shoreham had more Subbuteo than Beatties and Gamleys combined . . . I seem to recall a raid on a fridge in a back garden at Dacre gardens which yielded a load of teams as well, Pauls Grans house if memory serves. . .

I assumes it to mean the first team (set) you bought as an additional side to the red and blue teams the game came with. Or perhaps for the Wanderer type player who didn't have a set at home, but went around to friends houses to play on their sets.

We had a Subbuteo league in my road with the neighbouring kids. It was made up of a bizarre mixture of teams that was governed by the strips of those Subbuteo teams each of us had, for example Bury, Waterford, Partick Thistle, Shamrock Rovers and Celtic. A particular highlight was playing at night in a darkened room under the Subbuteo floodlights (only one kid had these), that had a habit of collapsing.

Further disputes arose over those cheats who had a tendency to push rather than flick.

The 'flick to win' graphic always looked too close to '**** to win' for my 12 year old eyes.

The original set came with a blue and a red team if my memory serves me right, so a first set would be going to a toy shop and choosing your favourite team.

There's only one Peter Adolph etc. Always played on the floor so imperitive the dog was kept out of the room, had a few broken limbs that way. Glued Ian Ure back with extensions so he was taller than the rest!

Aah Subbuteo

I managed to break one player on one of the teams that came with the starter packs - royal blue v red.

The Coop on London Road (in the days when it was a grand department store - late 70s) used to sell odd players from split packs and ickle letraset numbers. I bought a single Malmo player from a split pack, transferred number 9 on his back and he would star as a sort of on loan hero.

Also used to cut out coupons in Match or Shoot magazine and send off for free teams that were allocated pot luck - I had Watford, Coventry (Talbot) and Boavista...then I got a ZX Spectrum

Although it was with Aston Villa that I won the St Luke's Junior School League Division One in June 1981. My ninth attempt.

Failed to do the treble that term after defeats in the FA Cup Final and the World Cup Final.

It was the first time that a pupil from Class 10 had failed to win the World Cup. My teacher was not best pleased.
