Looney, Looney - It's 'You're', 'aren't', 'can't' and 'believe'.

The last one is easy to remember if you learn the phrase 'never believe a lie' Geddit? Lie not Lei!

Now...the nine times table. After me, 1x9 is...

It was fun wasn't it. Haven't done that for ages, and I am well pleased with that book!

Yep, it's dead. It started off with quite an interesting discussion. Then you turned up.

I haven't followd this thread and my comments are probably way off topic, but I will stick my oar in as usual.

I feel sorry for the bloke's family and that because they obviuosly loved him, but apart from that it doesn't really affect me. Old people have a habit of dying, be they rich, poor, once-powerful or never-powerful.

I can honestly say (and not surprisingly) I was more affected by the death of those six kids and two adults on the A23.

Reagan enjoyed a pretty good life by all accounts, apart from the end where I doubt he knew his name, and I would imagine the mistakes he made came about through the heady mix of near total power and short-sightedness.

It's not as if he was Norris McWhirter.

As I say, I feel sorry for his family, as I do when most peoplke die, but i certainly won't be making the trip to Washington.

Actually this thread proves fatbadger's point from the other day, there are right-wingers on here who can at least marshall their thoughts into a cohesive argument - and then there's looney.

I have somehow managed to avoid this thread because I thought it would be the usual old crap. Big mistake because I have just spent a very amused 5 minutes catching up on Looneys diatribe and him getting owned all over the place.

Looney the NSC :dunce: :lolol:

2. some people need to learn their history, especially bracknell. The taliban did not exist untill the 1990's neither was their any sign of a growth in Islamic fundementalism, which began in algeria in the early 90's, well the mass violence did.

4. Wern't the contras fighting a leftwing dictatorship? It was one of the hot spots in the cold war.
Of course the Taliban came to power in the 90's. But the conditions for this were created by the failure of the Mujahedeen who were backed by Reagan without any serious consideration of how they might be capable of delivering stable government - the "the basis of global security and stability" claimed by Reagan in his 1983 proclamation.

The Contras were fighting the Sandinistas. The Sandinistas had overthrown the US-backed dictatorship of the Somoza family. Funded illegally by Reagan (as well as using their own funds achieved from the proceeds of extortion, kidnapping and robbery), the Contras were substantially the remnants of Somoza's private army, operating out of Honduras. If this was a "hot spot in the cold war", it certainly wasn't a battle between the forces of dictatorship and democracy. In fact the Contras tended to shy away from direct confrontation with the Sandinista government. They much preferred to achieve instability by attacking soft targets (like farmers) and engaging in the murder of civilians - an effective way to destabilise a government and a disgraceful enterprise for a US president to be funding.

Now that is VERY well put, GT. (Except, what the hell does "concomitant" mean?)

I actually like the USA and most Americans, but that paragraph neatly summarises why it so easy not to!!

It means they go together - the grotesque material greed of a whole nation is getting expressed at a personal level, in the form of multiple trips to the 'all you can eat' burger cart - resulting in that instantly recognisable American look - the one that so long ago replaced the cowboy hat and boots. Known as the humungous arse.
