I haven't followd this thread and my comments are probably way off topic, but I will stick my oar in as usual.

I feel sorry for the bloke's family and that because they obviuosly loved him, but apart from that it doesn't really affect me. Old people have a habit of dying, be they rich, poor, once-powerful or never-powerful.

I can honestly say (and not surprisingly) I was more affected by the death of those six kids and two adults on the A23.

Reagan enjoyed a pretty good life by all accounts, apart from the end where I doubt he knew his name, and I would imagine the mistakes he made came about through the heady mix of near total power and short-sightedness.

It's not as if he was Norris McWhirter.

As I say, I feel sorry for his family, as I do when most peoplke die, but i certainly won't be making the trip to Washington.

Of course the Taliban came to power in the 90's. But the conditions for this were created by the failure of the Mujahedeen who were backed by Reagan without any serious consideration of how they might be capable of delivering stable government - the "the basis of global security and stability" claimed by Reagan in his 1983 proclamation.

The Contras were fighting the Sandinistas. The Sandinistas had overthrown the US-backed dictatorship of the Somoza family. Funded illegally by Reagan (as well as using their own funds achieved from the proceeds of extortion, kidnapping and robbery), the Contras were substantially the remnants of Somoza's private army, operating out of Honduras. If this was a "hot spot in the cold war", it certainly wasn't a battle between the forces of dictatorship and democracy. In fact the Contras tended to shy away from direct confrontation with the Sandinista government. They much preferred to achieve instability by attacking soft targets (like farmers) and engaging in the murder of civilians - an effective way to destabilise a government and a disgraceful enterprise for a US president to be funding.
