Penalty Encroachment Game

Mendoza

NSC's Most Stalked
Inspired by Match Of The Day :jester:

No one is meant to be in the box other than the kicker and keeper, but yesterday there was both volume and distance in the spot kick encroachers.

Points should be awarded per player in the box and distance travelled. Can the football league players beat the premier league lot?

Helguson's effort for QPR was particularly impressive!

Feel free to add any you spot during the season...:moo:

I posted about this on another thread last night. For QPRs first penalty there was more people in the box at the time of the kick than out of it. When I was young and qualified as classIII referee we was taught that the ref watched the goal keeper for moving as they were not permitted to move then and the lino, as he was, stood on the line and watched for encroachment or vice versa they swapped roles, but both liostenedf for the kicking of the ball to get their timing right. What do the assistants do now

i think it was millwall barnsley yesterday

there was one defender who had to actually check his run because he was quite close to being in front of darius henderson

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Why not follow the hockey model and have everyone behind the half way line apart from the penalty taker and the goalie? Silly to have a law/rule in place if it is not adhered to.

I often wonder about this. And keeper's are often a yard off their line when the ball's kicked. Complete and utter incompetence from the officials.

Interestingly (he says), the goalies in Mendoza's pictures are pretty much on their lines at the point of impact... very surprised by that as there must be an advantage in being even slightly forward at that stage and it would never be detected/stopped by refs...

it's a shame isn't it? referees argue the case and highlight a load of laws and rules about football when someone gets a red card, but the rule book goes when there's a penalty. the winner goes to QPR or Newcastle.

It only REALLY matters if the goalkeeper saves and the ball comes out for an encroaching player to become an active player in the second phase.

But they don't know at the time of encroachment, whether or not the penno is going to be saved or not.

It's naughty, simple as that.

As promised here is the reply I received from The Premier League to my e mail which is shown below their reply.

Dear Brian,

Thank you for your email.

As you may be aware we receive numerous queries referring to individual referee's decisions and indeed in relation to their overall performance. We are not able to comment on specific incidents such as those you raise, partly because it is only the referee who can answer questions about particular decisions and also because of the high level of correspondence we receive. We understand that it can be perplexing when there appear to be inconsistencies amongst the officials’ decisions. Each official will have his own interpretation of an incident of course, and no two incidents are ever identical. Even where fouls look similar, the speed of the players may be different, and the referee may be in a different position with a very different viewing angle. However Professional Game Match Officials, (PGMO) the body which employs all the referees, works hard to try and ensure a consistent approach where possible.

We report back regularly to Professional Games Match Officials, the body which employs all the referees, to ensure that they are fully aware of all the feedback we receive. The performances of the Select Group Referees are reviewed with each referee in detail in a number of different ways, with a view to improving their performance from week to week. Contrary to popular opinion, referees are under intense scrutiny from within the game and are appropriately criticised if it is felt that an incorrect decision has been made.

The referee’s technical performance in a match is assessed by the Independent Assessor, and their overall handling of the match is reported on by an Independent Match Delegate, who is often a former player, manager or coach. These reports focus on the referee’s control of the match, the way that he deals with key incidents as well as the way he communicates his decisions. These reports are shared with the referees on both a formal and informal basis.

Whilst I cannot comment on the individual incidents you refer to, I hope the above helps to clarify how we are constantly trying to improve and maintain standards of refereeing. We work hard to maintain high standards of behaviour from across the game. Referees are regularly reminded of the importance of exemplary conduct.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We appreciate every email that reaches us, and understand the passion which you feel for the game and the future of football.

Kind regards,

The following comment was recently submitted: Name:Brian comment: I was watching Match of The Day on Saturday night and when QPR took their firsty penalty there were more people in the penalty area than outside of this. Why is this not getting picked up? I qualified as Class III ref while in the army in 1060 and were taught that the ref watched the goalkeeper who in those days wasnt permitted to move and the linesmen watched for encroachment or vice versa. What are the assistant refs now doing becauser they do nothing to assist the refs in these situations. In most cases now the goalkleepers have moved forward a yard long before the kick is taken but this never or very rarely picked up by the officials. What is the point of having a rule if it is not adhered to and blatantly ignored. I would be interested in your views.

How about changing the law so that if as a defender you encroach the goal is given regardless of if it is saved, and if as an attacker you encroach there is no goal given regardless of if the player scores or not. Would soon put a stop to it.

It's one of those laws that hardly ever gets enforced, much like the foul throw law.

Probably working!

But what if a player from each team prematurely entered the box?

Exactly. If one of the encroachers (love that word) bangs in the rebound then I think the lino is then more likely to stick his flag up.

Advantage should be given to the non offending team but this is difficult if players of both teams go into the box. Perhaps the answer is to order the kick to be retaken if the penalty is scored and give a yellow card to the offenders. If missed carry on as was but give the same yellow card to the offenders.
