Well if you have XP and its at SP 2 then use Microsoft Defender to scan and destroy. Failing that go to www.download.com and download 'Syybot' or Adaware'. They're both free.

Ive downloaded Spyware Doctor and its scanning now, but do u have to register to get rid of the infected files?

Use Spybot-it's free
Use AdAware-it's free.

Then stay away from those dodgy porn sites.

'Fraid so. The two that have been recommended should do the trick though.

Better still ditch Windows XP altogether and use Ubuntu Linux. No more viruses or spyware.

If you all you need is a reliable machine to surf the web then Ubuntu is the way to go.

I thought Red Hat was the Linux to use, different strokes I guess. The problem with Linux is that not that many people use it and there's not that many options for application software for it. Linux is fine if you're a techie but the vast majority stick to the relative safety of WIndows. Most people use some varient of MS Windows at work thus they'll familiar with it to a greater or lesser extent.

Mind you Linux is becoming far more common as a server operation system as well as on the desktop.

Not for some years. Red Hat has not been updated since early 2003 - which due to the inane way that Linux development goes - is a loooong time

the distro of choice for the desktop now would be Ubuntu but I'd still recommend not using it.

I'll be honest I was working with Unix when it was either B or C shell and having worked on real mainframes I didn't like it then and I don't like it or any of its derivatives now. Having said that anything that might give Mr Gates something to think about isn't a bad thing. Now that MACs use Intell I guess anything's possible.

If and when it becomes a desktop standard I will be forced to get to know it but right now I'll pass. I get your point about Ubuntu although I admit its been a while since some non IT geek has mentioned Linux to me.
