Paul Jewell charged

No surprise, improper conduct. Can he beat the rap by blaming the incompetence of the official? Three crass errors in a matter of minutes, denied the pen, wasn't allowed to bring his player back on, offside equaliser.

I don't think I've ever felt more symapthy for a manager losing the plot, it should be Dowd up on a charge.

Abort, retry, fail
Particularly as there is so much at stake for the smaller teams. Those decisions could cost them £40m or so...

There is DEFINITELY favouritism of the 'Top four'.

To start an officials rant, when were the powers of the linesman taken away to make a decision. If you watch them, they always wait to see what the referee gives (even for throw ins) before putting up their flag. If referees are making mistakes, then linesmen are certainly not helping them or football as a whole.

It does seem very odd to me that no one is ever allowed to utter even the tiniest criticism of a referee nowadays without getting themselves up on an FA charge. They appear to be beyond reproach even when they make glaring errors that everyone in the ground can see, except themselves.

It really does open up the debate about bringing in video technology. Where a goal has been scored after a debatable offisde, where would the harm in double checking be? The ball is effectively dead, so the game isn't stopped unnecessarily, and with all the technology available, it would take less than a minute to show, for example, that Arsenals "goal" against Wigan was offside.

The ulitmate example though surely would have been Spurs goal at Old Trafford last season. An appalling decision which effectively stopped them qualifying for the champions League. How much did that cost them ? Sky tv proved the ball was over the line in less than 30 seconds. How long before we see a club suing a ref for loss of revenue?

Certainly the top 4 at home, I would agree.

Did feel soory for them on Sunday - they deserved something out of the game. Blatant offside for the equaliser, no excuses there.

At work - probably
Says in the 'Currant Bun' that Wigan players & Management might make a counter-claim citing foul and abusive language by the Referee! as he told several of the Wigan players to f*** off

The trouble is, video technology doesn't solve anything. Rugby has it and it still doesn't stop Jonny Wilkinson being awarded a try he didn't score. Cricket has it, and there are still lots of dodgy decisions.

All that would happen with video technolgy is that the game would slow down before you'd get that dodgy decision.

Problem is the technology will have to be available to everybody from the big four down to the Torquays etc, last night for example a wrong decision by a lineman robbed Crewe of a big Cardiff payday

As someone who knows Paul well and does some scouting for him, let me say he really is angry about this and will let the FA know what he thinks when he answers the charge. The fine he will no doubt receive will mean nothing to him, the only thing he is concerned about is a touchline ban. He reckons that if it had been a Championship, league1 or 2 side then the goal would have diisallowed, and they would have got the penalty! He probably is right as refrees tend to favour the big clubs when there is an element of doubt. Good luck to him I say!

Yes, three errors by the officials and Jewell freaks out completely, claiming it might cost his club up to £50m.
I notice that he said nothing at all about Emile Heskey's miss, which also would have put them 2-0 up at a crucial stage in the game. Heskey was too busy perfecting his celebration to see the ball hit the post and rebound to where he should still have been if he hadn't been so keen to celebrate. He made a big mistake.
That's right, it was a mistake. Just like the ones allegedly made by Phil Dowd and his linesman.
Yet he's not ranting on about how Heskey has cost the club £50m. Why the hell not?
Also, if Phil Dowd was telling the players to f*** off, I'm glad. It's about time someone did.

So, err, have you ever scouted any Albion players for him? Honestly now, you're under oath!

If Heskey was not such a notorious diver and general stumblebum Dowd might have been more accomodatiing, I reckon it is often the players own fault, rather than perhaps their clubs league position, that is more likely to influence the refs decision.

If I was Dowd and I saw "Big Emile" going down for the umpteenth time, I would hesitate as well.

Can appreciate what Jewell suggests about a 'Big 4 bias' in decisions, especially when those sides are playing at home. But this game is probably the wrong case to use. Much as I despise the Gooners, and the decisions they often seem to get, it was hardly a clear-cut penalty call - Heskey could, and should, have stayed on his feet - and Adebayor did have a perfectly good equaliser disallowed for an 'offside' that wasn't.

'Ah, but that nasty referee swore at us' - hardly scandalous.

(Lehmann and Henry, especially, are still graceless twats, though.)

(It was actually the season before last, so a Champions League place was never in the offing. Theoretically, a win would have had us ending 8th instead of 9th. Sorry, just being pedantic - but take your point otherwise!)

I sit corrected and bow to your superior knowledge of all things Spurs !

BTW - I may be going to their next European game at WHL. A mate of mine supports Spurs, and I work about half a mile from the ground, so he's going to try and get me a ticket and we're going to go.

Video technology would solve precisely NOTHING, IMHO. You'd just have Mssrs Jewell, Allardyce, Warnock, Wenger etc etc moaning on about how the felt so hard done by by the video refs instead, instead of just admitting that the better side had won when they've been beaten.
