So I contacted the council who informed me that the fine had already been cancelled.

This was because the warden/officer had issued a ticket on another case that day with an error. Apparently all fines are cancelled on that shift as a result ?

Makes me wish I had been parked illegally. I'm not really getting away with anything here.

An appeal is obvious because you can prove you were entitled to park in that spot and the technicality of displaying the permit is just that a technicality that you can argue.

It's never about getting away with anything. It's always about knowing that most Council PCNs are issued on a wing and a prayer by people who sometimes haven't been well trained. Council PCNs can usually be cancelled for one reason or another. This reason was as good as any!

At least with Council ones their cancellation policy is a proper one, unlike parking firms where it is a farce and you have to beat them in other ways such as complaining to the landowner (just had a pm from a victim of ParkingEye who got their cancelled by doing this, as advised - first step with non-Council scam PCNs = complaint to landowner).
