Woman here has been off for the last two days as her kid is ill. Don't mind that. Apparently she gets 5 days a year off for free if her kid is ill. Why's that then? Should it not be taken out of annual leave. Why do people with kids get more free time of than those who have chosen not to have kids.

I wouldn't bring this up normally but today she's actually in but has been banging on about writing in icing on a birthday cake, she's asked my boss to do it. She should shut the f*** up and do it herself, maybe on one of her free days holiday she gets when her kid is pretending to be ill.

I think it should come out of holiday too. People without kids cant get leave to look after their ill partner/parents/pet, it comes out of holiday leave.

The same with smokersm, they get paid for fag breaks in some companies, that doesnt come out of their lunch hour or pay. Non-smokers get diddly!!

It's called Parental Leave and is a statutory right for all Parents it is unpaid however.

It is actually called dependants leave and it doesn’t have to be for kids, could be your mother for example. Whether or not it is paid is at the discretion of the employer.

If she just took the time as sick then she'd have been paid.....

this really annoys me, there is a woman in my department who has 2 kids and i swear she must have at least 1 day off a week with them, if its not a day off then she will get a phone call to go and collect them from school. The other annoying thing is i have to do her bloody work when she isnt here, meaning less time for me to do my bits.

It's called 'carer's leave', I think. It's a tricky one, but if your kid's poorly and you have to take time off to care for it (very important, obviously) it's a bit tough to have that taken off your holiday - it's bloody hard work. Five days is not enough, really, 'cos young kids, especially, get sick all the time, and you end up with hardly any holiday left at all.

The Government has always promoted family-friendly policies and they should be non-discriminatory, i.e., Carers leave will cover anyone who has a caring responsibility. It is getting more & more difficult for line managers to use their discretion to deal with people who constantly take the piss.

As I work for the Government, I get a carers allowance, but I only need to care for someone on a Saturday night :drink:

Look at it another way. People with kids have to take them on holiday in school holidays, when holidays are many hundreds of pounds more expensive, thus subsidsing people without kids who can take their holidays out of school time, when holidays are much cheaper.

It's actually called 'Parental Leave' and parents can take upto 13 weeks off upto the 5th birthday of the child. It is of course unpaid but some companies may at their discretion pay the employee.

If you have a sick relative, what you need to take is compassionate leave.

If Mendoza has a problem with his colleagues time off then perhaps time spent discussing it with your boss would be better spent than posting on here. Also what is amazing is how, whilst doing your own job and covering for someone else, you still have time to post on here, regularly!!!

Oh, and by the way, I very much suspect that you have far more free time than any parent. You leave work and can do what you like. Equally, your weekends are your own. Having a kid changes all that.

look at the GDP rates and productivity rates of the nordic countries and you will wee a caring society is a more productive society and are also less anti-social.
