I won 47 pounds on online gambling this weekend. I don't see how I can possibly fail. The bigger the stake the bigger the winnings eh?!

I know the temptations are all over the place when people get into debt.

But every time someone gets themselves in horrensous trouble or, God forbid, tops themselves because of it, the families wheel out the old "It's all Barclaycard/Capital One/MBNA/Ocean Finance's fault" line, as if it's somehow down to the bank that the individual blew £50k in two years on 60" plasma screen TVs, holidays in the Bahamas and Prada shoes.

We all need to take a bit of personal responsibility somewhere down the line.

Absolutely!

One of the 'things' that the girl who stole from her employer and ran up huge, huge debts used for her defence in court, was that William Hill online, where she bet 90% of the time never at any stage asked her if she could afford to bet the money she was betting. Eh, I have sympathy for her because it's an addiction and all that but what difference would WH asking her if she could afford to bet this money made. Surely if you are that desperate to gamble you will just say yes, even if the truth is no and carry on.

The judge accepted that as part of her defence as well. No personal accountability but because WH didn't ask her if it was Ok she carried on....

"We were nearly £75,000 in debt through no fault of our own, apart from buying a brand new computer, BMW 3 Series, widescreen HD TV, three holidays a year to the Maldives and several pairs of Jimmy Choo stilettoes for Noreen. We didn't know what to do when the demands started flying in every day!

But Ocean Finance sorted us out alright. Instead of thirty six individual debts, they consolidated them, hassle free, no questions asked, into one MASSIVE debt, which means that, while we may still be paying for our self-inflicted extravagances until the day we die, we feel comfortable enough about it to afford Sky Plus and an X-Box 360 for Chelsea and Jordan in the meantime. Thank you, Ocean Finance!"

Exactly, money for nothing is not to be sniffed at.

(I like to use my winnings to fund my cocaine habit though)

I can't agree to a ban on internet gambling, in the same way I can't agree to a ban on smoking, drinking, and rollerblading nude...

Its personal choice - and as soon as the government starts dictating more and more what we can and can't do I believe that will be a crying shame...

I'm not sure my opinion is really politically correct, but I don't really feel sorry for that lady last night, she chose to get into it, ruined her own life, and can't blame anyone but herself...Simple!

Couldn't agree more with this.

It's the "It's someone else's fault!" way of thinking that has got people into MASSIVE debt in the first place.

I cannot STAND the nanny state attitude developing in this country. If you fall off a cliff flying a kite and there wasn't a fence there to stop you, it is still your stupid fault for flying a kite near a cliff.

Companies I DO blame are those willing to give loans and mortgages to backruptees (is that a word?). This should be illegal until you have cleared your previous debt. All to easy to have it written off and start again IMHO.

There is a difference between smoking and gambling though as smoking can affect people around you, whereas gambling affects just you and those dependant on you.

Agreed, but my point was more to the fact that you have the right to choose to do these things! You choose to do something and if it goes wrong you can only blame yourself, not the company for "making" you do it, not the bank for loaning you the money... I for one am fearful of a nanny state, and also this to me smacks of people trying to lay the blame for their own silly actions, at someone elses feet?

It's OK, folks, you can gamble your lives away as much as you like.

When you lose your home, just blame the banks or finance firms who lent you the money, it's their fault for putting temptation in your way!

How VERY dare they...

So isn't right for the stupid to be protected from themselves by limiting the provision of money-sucking gambling? Having vast numbers of duped mugs moping around in abject poverty isn't good for anyone. The stupid, like the poor, will always be with us.

I can see your point, but once you stop banning things that are "bad" where do you stop? Just because a minority spoil it should the government legislate against it?

But that's what happens, and rightly. Heroin is banned because it kills people. Gin was restricted in the 18th century because half of London was dying from drinking too much of it. You can either say "it's up to the individual, nothing else matters" or acknowledge the fact that there's nothing wrong with responsible governments stopping the underclasses from either killing or themselves or bankrupting themselves.

Again I agree - but what I'm trying to say (obviously not very well  ) is that isn't there a fair few people who do responsibly gamble? or responsibly drink, or responsibly do whatever "bad" things society deems as bad? If the government tells us we can't do these things anymore (because a few people can't do it responsibly) - then where does it stop? Thats my concern.... I just have this inate fear of a nanny state...

So the majority suffer because of a few 'stupid' people?

Should the 'stupid' be sterilised to protect them from being crap parents?

I'm obviously going a bit far here but where do you draw the line? At the end of the day people have to take responsibility for themselves.

Around this sometimes mercyless world, there are people dying of diseases, starving, or getting oppressed by others. Some innocents are murdered, some have no chance to forge a life, make decisions of their own, or even enter the world to be able to make an impression.

Species of animals are going extinct, most are prey to the hunger of another, or are used solely for the purpose of feeding humans. Some are used from birth for experiments. Some animals are killed while raising offspring, and these die from starvation waiting for a parent they rely on, one that will never return.

The ozone layer is compromised due to our activity here in burning fossil fuels, gasses are emitted that continue to pollute the atmosphere we need.

There's a butterly trapped in a spider's web........ etc.

Okay, nice thread, and thinking about it, I remain bereft of sympathy for the poor victims of gambling......no wait...... I MOCK them!
