Apologies if this has been covered anywhere else, but I haven't seen the scenarios fully covered.

IF:
Palace win the League Cup they are in the Europa League. Ok.
But what are the options if they merely lose in the final?

If Man City beat them, then presumably they are in as City will secure a CL place.
What if Liverpool beat them, and go on to secure a Europa League place with their Premiership placing as well? In that scenario, does the place go to Palace, or the next highest finisher in the Prem?

A bit like the year Liverpool won the CL and finished outside the top 4, I wouldn't be surprised if this possibility hasn't been covered by the authorities, but if they have covered it, does anyone know the answer?

I think it's winners only. If Birmingham had lost to Arsenal the Europa league place would have gone to a prem club finishing outside the CL places.

I think the rule is you have to win the cup to go into the Europa League.

If Palace or Cardiff lose in the final, and Liverpool or Man City have already qualified through their league position, the Europa League place will go to the 6th place team in the EPL.

From Wikipedia...

The winners (of the League Cup) qualify for the UEFA Europa League, if they have not qualified for European competition through the Premier League or by winning the FA Cup. If this occurs, then the Europa League berth goes to the highest-placed team from the Premier League not already qualified for Europe.

*and breathe* so Palace are not a win against Cardiff away from Europe. They WILL have to beat Liverpool or Man City in the Final. TFFT.

I believe that a Europa spot should only be filled by a team in the countries top division nota one that has won 6 or 7 games on a knockout basis when you could conceivably draw weak opposition for nearly every game. This should apply to all countries not just England. Before somebody says this is our grapes I would say the same if BHA were in CPFC position. To me it is wrong that a lower team should represent this country in a European competition. What if Orient or Gillingham had a good run and got to the final would it be right for them to go into Europe. Would Germany France or Spain allow a 2nd or 3rd division side in to the competition I dont think so.

All hypothetical of course but how nice for the Nigels to plan a few continental caravanning trips.

On the other hand you have to feel sorry for away fans from European clubs finding out what a dump Selhurst is and in particular what a slum the Arthur Wait stand is. Surely that doesn't meet UEFA standards.....

Seriously though anything like a run in the Carling Cup or even the Europa Cup that dilutes their form in the Championship (or League 1) is a good thing.

Well, your sour grapes are blown out of the water but the fact that, given that scenario, the runners-up in the FA Cup do qualify for Europe.

So, if Orient or Gillingham did win the cup, it would be perfectly right for them to go into Europe, principally because they deserve it.

Some awful elitism there, Brian.

I think somehow Eoropean Fans would rather visit a slum within easy reach of central London than have to park on a muddy Racecourse three miles from the ground and then have to queue for an hour trying to get back to their car. Or, trying to squeeze onto a tiny train not fit for purpose.

What is the position about Cardiff, being in Wales, how can they qualify as an English entrant? Or isn't Wales a proper country and never was?

That is my point they are representing this country, our country, as being the best so as I said I would make it a condition of entry into a European competition that the team be in that countries top divsion whatever it may be called so yes they are the elite of the countries football. Isnt that the whole point of European competition to have the best play in a competition not the luckiest.

If you win your national cup, then somewhere down the line you can be considered the best.

And no, you're not representing your country.

I would change best to possibly luckiest depending on the draw, especially in The League Cup as the best teams put out weakened squads usually, and how do you come to the conclusion that they are not representing English football.

Luckiest depending on the draw? You still have to BEAT them.

how do you come to the conclusion that they are not representing English football.

Because that's what happens to be the case.

They are representing themselves.

One representative from Wales

The Welsh Cup (Welsh: Cwpan Cymru) is a knock-out football competition contested annually by teams from Wales.
The Football Association of Wales is the organising body of this competition, which has been run (except during the two World Wars) every year since its inception in 1877-78. In the early years of organised football in Wales, football was very much the sport of North Wales rather than the rugby union playing south - the FAW was founded in Ruabon, near Wrexham in 1876, and Wrexham remained the site of the FAW's head office until 1986; it was not until 1912 that a southern team, Cardiff City, won the Welsh Cup for the first time.
The winning team qualifies to play in the following season's UEFA Europa League (previously teams qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup, which was discontinued in 1999).

Cardiff were invited to compete in the Welsh Cup and declined. So if they did they could have won the Welsh Cup and Palace might have qualified for Europe even having got beaten in the semi-final.

Having seen how the highest ranked British club has treated the UEFA cup why not give it to lower league clubs, they might treat it with the respect it deserves.

No doubt if they drew Juventus at home they would give the Italians a 2,500 allocation and then put their home tickets on Groupon ! :wanker:

It's a real pity if you ask me. If they qualified it would be lovely if they played a really nasty European side with proper Ultras. The image of the Holmsedale Fanatics crying for help with knives hanging out their backs is practically my wet dream.
