[Cricket] Pakistan-England Test Series

It was a general point about how some people only ever seem to consider Australia as a significant test, not a direct comparison between Man City and Pakistan (although I think I'm right in saying our away record against Pakistan before this series was worse than our away record against any other country, so it wouldn't be so ridiculous a comparison).
Edit: I was right in saying that:
Also worth remembering how crap we always are in the West Indies next time we go over there and everybody expects us to win comfortably.

We have been playing Australia since 1877 and Pakistan since 1954 so I suggest that the history is a factor.

Going from the start of 1990 (chosen because it roughly but not exactly coincides with my age, and for no other reason), to the start of the series just gone:
England's win/loss away
to Pakistan - 0.142 (one win, seven lost)
to Australia - 0.187 (six wins, 32 lost)
That 0.142 w/l ratio is England's worst over that time period.

Agree, and they're playing test cricket that is making every game interesting, exciting and worth tuning into. It's not even the winning that is the thing to get carried away with, it's the manner of the approach, the spirit in the side, the players responding to the environment they are in.

2 big test matches coming up in New Zealand that again should be treated with the respect and reverence that a series against the Kiwis deserves, regardless of what goes on in the summer.

We can start worrying about the Aussies in June.
A Test with Ireland before that.

Ashes is June and July, doubtless because they want to give the everyone a chance to wank over The Humbug in August again. I say 'everyone', I mean people who don't actually like cricket.

The Ashes fixtures then ODI warm ups for the ODI world cup were set a long time ago. The Hundread fixtures have just slotted into the gap in August to avoid international clashes - think they were only confirmed a month or so ago. While cricket can shoot itself in the foot sometimes, I think the only reason there isn't an Ashes test in August is both countries wanted time to prepare for the world cup.

You are likely right. My spitting resentment of The Humbug clouded me judgement.

Didn't they have two Ashes series back to back in 2013 specifically to avoid the world cup following straight on from the Ashes?
Or was that just an excuse to squeeze another moneyspinning series out of the two sides?
I lose track of where the incompetence stops and the greed begins nowadays.

Interesting - did we (England) not ever play Ceylon pre full independence?

Full independence was in 1972, but between 1948 and 72 Ceylon was an independent country in the Commonwealth.

Yes. The MCC stopped off on the boat to Australia a few times or dropped by after an Indian tour.. MCC-organised England teams tended to play single day games until 1933 and had four matches in Ceylon, two of them first-class. Ted Dexter played for the MCC there in the 1950's. Not sure how these matches are recorded as Ceylon did not have Test status.

There was another one here in 2015. From memory, I think it was something to do with the World Test Championship schedules coming into play.

Of course, it was helpful to stuff the Aussies, get swotted in Australia, and then bring them back the following year to stuff them again.

.... and then return for another stuffing.
