Ireland was the only place to have a referendum,and they said no,which SHOULD have ended the whole Lisbon "treaty".However,in Europe no doesn't mean no until it becomes yes,at which point all the politicians involved are shown to have been right after all,and are therefore safe to going back to expense boosting.

I don't think the Irish have said NO to Europe. They've said NO to the Lisbon Treaty. Just like the French said NO to the first version of the new constitution.

The people of Ireland and France are still fully signed up Europeans.

A few years ago I'm sure I remember possibly Denmark having a vote on something to do with Europe (a bit vague there!) and it came up no, then another which came up no again. So then they had a third which was yes. I remember wondering then if they would have another to see if it was no again or whether they were just going to keep on until they got the answer they wanted.

My understanding of the Lisbon treaty, and I admit I have not fully read it, is that it is more or less the same as the last one. We are being told that it is different and does not have the same binding powers as the last one, but in effect it is the same. Good on the Irish government for allowing their people to make the decision.
