P20 on the rocks as counties lose faith

Excellent.

Bring back the Sunday League! It's a great format and, spread across the whole season, it's a great competition. Watching Sunday League games at Hove is what got the young Bracknells (and a lot more of their generation) into cricket.

spot on. as much as people like 20/20 where is the value for money? watch 2 1/2 hours of cricket or nearly 6 hours of cricket, for roughly the same price. i know what i would rather do!

if the pro40s stay, then it might well secure a renewal of my membership

What is so frustrating is that so many say how much they miss the Sunday League 40 over competition. It fitted so neatly into a summer Sunday. Yet the current policy deciders seem totally ignorant of the demand.

Brilliant News, no-one I have spoken to amongst the Sussex Members wanted the Pro40 axing and a lot were considering not renewing their membership for next season because of this.

As usual the ECB have had to be forced into doing the right thing.......:tosser:

The game has sold it's soul to Sky and they feel they should use the floodlights.

I really don't see why we need Twenty20 competitions. An extended version of the current one retaining the finals day, possibly adding Ireland, Scotland and/or the Netherlands, would probably suffice.

Sunday games, whilst loved by the fans, do not work for commercial opportunites. The feeling is that if they have the game on a weekday or weekday evening then they can sell the corporate hospitality. They don't care if the fans found it good as they don't matter.

Whether this will change with the cut back in hospitality these days will be interesting. At Arundel on Wednesday only four of the dozen or so hospitality tents were in use and one of these was the SCCC executive members tent. Go back a couple of years and the tents were sold out well in advance for games at Arundel.

Well they have the other 20/20 bollocks to make money - as stated previously they will lose a lot of members if the County Championship is cut back and Pro40 is axed which is something to think about when you talk about 'commercial opportunities'

T20 is ideal TV cricket. The ECB are pretending that the 40 over game is not popular because they are £££obsessed and have created a nice little gravy train for themselves. Clarke, Fordham and the rest of them should be locked up with their mate, Sir Allen.

Bloody typical, just when Sussex finally have learned how to play 20/20 and sodding win, the ECB scrap the format.. grrr....:wozza:

No. The T20 Cup will continue. It's a new T20 league to replace Pro40 that we're talking about.

The ECB also seem to be obsessed with what happens in India. Last month's T20 World Cup proved that India have less invention in their cricket than their financially poorer S Asian rivals in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They have more cash of course which is the ECB's only concern.

One Twenty20 plenty for ECB

Wed 22 Jul, 04:31 PM

The England and Wales Cricket Board are to draw up plans for just one enhanced Twenty20 competition next summer following a meeting with county chiefs.

Original proposals placed the high-profile P20 alongside the current Twenty20 Cup but the ECB backtracked on that prior to meeting the 18 county chairmen and chief executives.

A 2010 schedule will now be drawn up, incorporating a revised number of domestic tournaments - the LV County Championship, Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup - to be rubber-stamped at an ECB board meeting on July 29.

"These were extremely constructive talks and the consensus of opinion was clearly for three competitions, with a desire to preserve the primacy of Test cricket and the LV County Championship," said ECB chief executive David Collier.

Attracting new sponsors and broadcasters in the current climate is difficult while scheduling would also have proved problematic had the governing body gone through with plans for two 20-over tournaments.

England remain committed to two Test series a summer, and with the ECB desperate to protect the primacy of Test cricket, they canvassed the opinion of those with stakes in the game, including the leading players.

In order to squeeze in this country's answer to the Indian Premier League, the first of two Test series would have to begin unseasonably early - just as it did this summer when the Lord's fixture against West Indies opened on May 7.

That proved a turn-off for players and public alike and so the early part of seasons are now likely to be dominated by four-day cricket, in preparation for Tests.

The FPT is likely to be shunted back a few weeks, to start in June, and will include quarter-final and semi-final stages, while the Championship is set to remain a 16-match campaign.

Finer details of the remaining Twenty20 Cup's regulations, including the number of overseas players permitted per county, are yet to be announced but the new-look competition is to be played throughout the whole season rather than in one short, sharp burst and predominantly on Thursdays, Fridays and at weekends.

So, out of a pig's ear the ECB look like they will stumble upon the right combinations:

- The FP Trophy starting later
- The Twenty20 Cup being played like a one-day trophy, with matches spread over the course of the season. This will fight the saturation effect and enable part-time spectators to attend more matches
- Test series starting as late as possible
- County Championship being retained in its current format

Perfect.
