Does anybody have any stats about what percentage of goals scored are own goals ???
The figure I found was 5%
This seems a bit high to me ???

I can't help you with general or overall figures, but I've just done a quick analysis of all goals scored in first team matches involving the Albion during the Amex era [ie home and away](so from 2011-12 onwards including league, play-offs, FA Cup and League Cup under it's various guises). Using data up to and including the Charlton game last Saturday, there have been:-

527 goals scored in total (in 230 matches)

Of which:-

15 were own goals, which is 2.85%
42 were penalties, which is 7.97%

Of course, an own goal is open to interpretation; in the home game against Forest last season just about every media outlet recorded Dunk as being the scorer of Albion's first goal, when subsequent reporting and video footage clarified that it was actually a Gary Gardner own goal (and is recorded in this analysis as such).

That one by Hawkins beggars belief, what on earth was he thinking at the time ?

In 652 games that I have seen, I've witnessed 30 own goals scored for us by obliging opposition players.
That's 4.6% - so that stat found by the OP sounds about right.

I'm trying to work out if it's better to back 0-0 or no goalscorer.
If the price is bigger I always back 0-0.

To be fair the the lad there were two opposition players coming in at the far post that would probably knock it in. That meant he had to either head it wide or over the bar. He then messed it right up

The keeper should have come though

That is own goals as a percentage of games seen - not goals scored.

That's true, but I've missed just a handful of home games since 1987.
It's not a true reflection of away games though

You then have to consider if the own goal will be the first and only goal in the game.

Yes, so the odds of it being 1-0 OR 0-1 AND an own goal scored.
I don't think this happens enough to justify taking 8s instead of 10s but I'd like to see the working :moo:

The point that CP 0 3 BHA is making is that the figure you quoted of 4.6% is the percentage of GAMES in which you have seen the opposition score an own goal. However, that is not what the OP was after, which is the percentage of all goals scored which are own goals.
