BBC Sport - Football - Michael Owen ruled out for rest of season

Manchester United striker Michael Owen will not play again this season after pulling his hamstring in the 2-1 Carling Cup win over Aston Villa.

Owen, who scored United's equaliser at the Wembley final, pulled up while chasing a through ball in the first half and was replaced by Wayne Rooney.

The injury ends Owen's feint hopes of playing for England at the World Cup.

"Feint" hopes ? Nice one Beeb.
Oh well, that removes the debate I suppose. Personally I'd have taken him if he was fit, definite sub material for the last 20 if we needed a goal, but I think Capello had already made his mind up anyway.

A crying shame, Owen always turns up to the big games and has never let England down in the major tournaments. He will be a big loss this time around.

Bloody hell. He tries shooting at goal and is out for three months.

Reminds me of the last world cup, where after 30 seconds he pulls up, crawls off the pitch and was out for 6 months. I'm not sure he even touched the ball.

If my grandkids ever ask me about Michael Owen (I'm not sure why they would), I think these will be my abiding memories of him. Clearly class, but fragile as hell.

Never fails to amaze me the amount of stick Owen gets on here. Not many players ever make it to 40 international goals. Unless you play for Fiji or someone like that.

He'll be sorely missed at the finals. It's all very well having Defoe and Crouch to knock the goals in against Algeria but better teams defences will gobble them up.
