Have to admit that I haven't bought any albums yet this year, though I did pick up a few CD's during my travels to South America earlier this years, couldn't get enough of Argentine electro-tango!

However, I do have a couple saved in my basket on Amazon just waiting to become my next boredom purchase, these are Flaws by Bombay Bicycle Club and I speak because I can by Laura Marling.

I agree with the comment above, why should we stick with tried and tested bands just because we are over 40...that would be a terrible waste of a lot of decent music. Sad to think that a lot of people don't own a hi-fi anymore, preferring to listen on an i-pod or from a lap-top...they really are missing out on a lot of musical enjoyment.

Agreed sir, but an iPod with decent headphones(sennheisser i have personally) produces fabulous sound

Really? I thought everyone had a stereo system? Maybe worth a poll?

I also have good sennheisser headphones but I wouldn't dream of using them in the house when there is a 4 speaker stereo set up

That is the thing though, you THINK you have heard it all before, but every song/Band has it's own merits. Yrs ago, there was a particular type of music that was the 'In' thing, nowadays anything goes i think. I think music has never been more diverse and interesting

Dont' patronise me young man:lolol: (nb i'm 40 so i could be making a mistake with that comment.)

The thing is yes, with much of it i have heard it all before. Thats not to i don't discover stuff thats new and original to me, more that it's harder to find it than when i was a 16 year old discovering music.

Am 57, and guess the first single i ever bought was Telstar by Tornados! But in the 45 or so years or so that have passed I reckon I have been spoilt by just how much music I have been able to hear over the decades. In the past week i have played, in no significant order, and to best of my memory the following music. Dylan, The National, Beach Boys, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground, Judy Collins, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Doors, Tom Waits, Smiths, Arcade Fire, Rolling Stones, Cohen, Ahab, Fairports, Muse. currently The National I am playing a lot. with 6 decades of music to delve into, i am always in the mood for something. does not bother me if it was recorded 1960 or 2010...

What I do find amazing sometimes is how much, despite living through the era's I still find that passed me by at the time. Ones that i really got into second time around and years later include Joy Division, Blodwyn Pig and Budgie, Can, Little Feat, Poco,
Jackson Browne actually passed me by first time round so have loads to delve into there.

Maybe, but we could go with different options to see how serious people were about their hi-fi, covering everything from boogie-box up to a top-end separates system.

Mine is now a little dated but still does the job admirably, being a Cyrus 7 amp, power supply and CD player with bi-wired Wharfedale Coleridge speakers. There is no doubt that I could get a far better sound now than when I put that lot together, for a fraction of the outlay, but I am happy with it.

True, Sennheissers are amazing though. Enjoy ya music and get stuck in the the new stuff!

I bought an i-touch earlier this year and am still using the headphones from my old i-pod, without the extra piece of cord containing the volume switch...the wire isn't quite long enough so I want to buy some new headphones.

I don't really want anything too big and hate the little bud in ear type...prefer the type that clip on your ear. Can anyone give any recommendations?

my very first hi-fi system of separates i bought around 1970. it consisted of an A & R deck, Trio Amplifier and Celestion Speakers.

If you haven't already got them can I recommend Late for the Sky and Running on Empty. Two of my all time favourite albums

I bought my first system in the mid 80's, had an AR Legend deck...it is still in the attic, reckon it just needs a new belt and it would be working again...the rest of my system was Denon, which was OK. Upgraded most of that after about 5/6 years to a Cyrus 2 amp and PSX, with a Marantz CD player and the original Denon tape deck. Finally bought my current system in late 2000.

I had a Pioneer amp, Garrard deck and Wharfedale Diamond speakers, the speakers are still going strong, the amp and the turntable are in the attic.
